“we will be back”

Bedruthan Steps Hotel

4 of 5 stars
Milton Keynes
May 4, 2008

We stayed at Bedruthan Steps during the April half term break .

We had read previous reviews which describe Bedruthan Steps as a haven for parents and their children, I can only say that we were not disappointed.

Bedruthan Steps does children very well, they are able to relax throughout the hotel. The beach is on the doorstep. The spa and newly refurbished pool are excellent, my treatment was one of the best I have had.

The only negative was we felt the evening menus were a little limited, and the standard of the food was not as good as it should have been.

But all in all we will be back.

(Our children cried when they had to go home.)

Bedruthan Steps Hotel

5 of 5 stars
Kent, UK

I booked this hotel for a last minute weekend getaway with my wife and 18 month old daughter. First comment would be that it wasn't especially easy to find on the internet and they might need to better optimise their web-site for internet search engines. That said, they are apparently very busy all year round so maybe they don't need to?

We booked directly with the hotel for three nights which meant we got the third night half price and the rate included dinner, B & B. The process was simple and the staff very helpful and everything was confirmed by snail mail in a nicely presented pack. The hotel does seem to make a very worthwhile effort to reduce its environmental impact so slightly surprising they sent out a paper pack when an e-mail would have done the trick.

Anyway, we arrived late after a five hour drive from Kent and we were checked in very efficiently by the night porter. This friendly and effective service was replicated by virtually every member of the BSH team and they should be commended for finding, motivating and retaining such a good bunch of people.

Our room was a villa suite, newly refurbished, large, clean, well equipped, very comfortable and with a truly stunning view of the bay. It could have done with a DVD player, some basic toiletries and a kettle big enough to get a baby's bottle in (or provide each room with a large jug or something) but other than that, was well appointed. The hotel has an excellent selection of facilities for children and toddlers, especially the pool and indoor soft play area. The weather was pretty grim all weekend but there was always plenty to do and overall, hats off to the hotel for providing such a family friendly environment.

The food was actually seriously good although they did seem to have a bit of an issue getting food to stay warm between the kitchen and the table but when I sent a dish back it was quickly replaced with a piping hot one without any fuss at all. My wife is quite limited as to what she can/will eat but she was impressed with the perfectly poached eggs at breakfast and commented that her evening meals were better than the meal she had at Le Gavroche recently. I also thought the food was excellent although the starter portions could do with being bigger. The chocolate truffle dessert was truly exquisite so a sincere 'well done' to whoever made it. The wine list has had a lot of thought put into it and the bar knocked up some very decent cocktails.

We booked a couple of spa treaments in the 'Ocean Spa' . My wife claimed it was the best facial treatment she'd ever had although my massage was far less impressive - probably just depends who you get.

So, this is all sounding pretty good and you might be wondering if there is a catch? Well, apart from a few irritations, there isn't one.

My only real complaint relates to the two concerted attempts to wake up the younger residents of the hotel, one on the Saturday night with a fireworks display at 2000 and the second at 1600 on a Sunday afternoon, which is apparently the best time of the week to test their fire alarm. It was possibly unfortunate that my daughter was sleeping at the time but nevertheless, the alarm was obviously very loud and quite distressing when you are 18 months in a darkened room and which went on intermittently for 10 minutes. I did suggest maybe doing the test at 0855 on a Monday morning but would also question why it has to be done at precisely the same time each week? Why not review the week's activities and plan the test around those times when people are likely to be awake and/or at lunch or something? Also, the notices that were put up were a bit rubbish and if like us, you didn't venture into the public areas that morning, you wouldn't have seen them. So, bigger notices placed near major thoroughfares would be useful please, not just one small landscape A4 notice in reception.

Anyway, apart from this and the very uninspiring massage, we had a great time and will certainly go back at some point. The owners/managers clearly have a passion for their hotel, which is very evident amongst the staff they employ who should all feel very proud of the excellent service they are providing. Thank you.

We'd just had our third child, so wanted a break from the routine which isn't easy when you've already got a 2 and a 4 year old in tow.

This place was superb - it doesn't look much from the outside, but once inside you realise it's perfect for kids. There's a central bar come seating area with a huge open space for the kids to play so you can grab a coffee and relax whilst the kids entertain themselves with the toys availalable, there's an indoor soft play/climbing frame which my kids wanted to go to every day, and the restaurant is fantastic. You leave the kids in the room on a listening service and take a 'buzzer' with you to notify you if they stir. It works really well, and we had no problems, leaving us to enjoy the fantastic food in a really relaxed atmosphere.

It's not cheap, but we contacted the hotel out of season direct and we were able to get a good deal. It's definitely worth a try. We compromised on the room to have road facing rather than sea facing. This wasn't ideal as there was some loud engine noises as delivery trucks entered hotel grounds, but given the discount this was acceptable.

There are more facilities than I could mention, like the pool/spa which was being built whilst we were there and looked great, the outdoor adventure playground and the evening kids' entertainers which were a fantastic alternative to children's TV to wind down to before bedtime.

After trawling online for weeks before finally making a decision where to go for a late autumn break with my husband and 7 month old baby, we finally went for Bedruthan Steps Hotel with a sea view room. It had everything there that we needed for our baby which really minimised the stuff we packed - they pureed food for her, had bibs, sterlizers etc and cleaned up all our mess after breakfast and children's tea time every day. Dinner for adults was really good and tasty and there was entertainment organised if you wanted to take part - both for children and adults. What probably made our stay even better was that it was a quiet time for the hotel so we had the best of their service - on our last night it got quite busy and we did feel a bit like we were on a conveyor belt for dinner. However, all in all, it had all the facilities we could have wanted with the new spa and pool, baby listening service and so felt like a proper break. The location between Newquay and Padstow also meant that there were lots of things to see and do in the local area and lovely walks. The only downside was discovering our daughter likes to play with her toys at least once in the middle of the night and this was a bit of a shock in our family room!

This was a fantastic hotel, brilliant for the children, and completely relaxing for the adults. There was nothing that was too much trouble - the staff met every request with a smile and were fantastic with the children.

It may help that it was November and therefore off season - I'm not sure I would want to go in peak summertime given one member of staff commented that you have to queue to use the facilities such as the pool.

The food was wonderful - the only negative was that having had the most divine feuillotine of quince on day one, I asked if I could have one kept for me for the following night, and some overzealous pastry chef cleaned out the fridge and so I never got to have it again - so we'll have to go back!

In short, I really can't fault it and we're already planning our next trip!
