This was our first visit to Hilton Head Island. My extended family of 9 stayed at the Coral Sands Resort in Hilton Head Island, SC from June 16 - June 23, 2006. We had a 3 bedroom, 2 bath end unit condo right beside the tennis court. The furnishings were lovely and the kitchen was well equipped. We did have some trouble with the temperature in the refridgerator the first 48 hours as it would not get cold. We had the maintenance personnel come out 3 different times, but were told that the fridge "was working properly". It seems that when the cleaning staff clean the fridge between guests, they defrost it, and it takes several hours for the temperature to get cold again. This was a problem for us, as we had a baby still taking a bottle and we needed someplace to keep the milk cold. We ended up buying a small styrofoam cooler and ice to use until the temperature became acceptable (on the afternoon of the second day). For the first two calls to maintenance their response time was less than 1 hour, but the third time it was more like 5 hours. However, we did receive a call from Reba Management the evening of the second day to make sure that we were satisfied with the situation. Here are a few facts you should know that I wish I had clarified before our stay. The beach is approx. a 10-15 minute WALK from the resort. As there is no public beach parking that is convenient to the resort, you have to walk along a sidewalk for several straight blocks, cross a busy 4 lane road (this can be life threatening) and then follow a fenced-in walkway thru the parking lot of another resort complex until you come to the boardwalk which actually leads onto the beach. It's not a difficult walk, but dragging all the beach gear AND 3 small children in the heat wasn't always my favorite part of the day. There are no public restrooms near the beach, so you'll be walking back to your room "when nature calls". The pool is rather small and we had to walk thru a parking lot and down approximately 1 block to get to it. You are required to wear arm bands when using the pool as proof that you are a resort guest. The pool and hot tub close at 10:00 PM. Don't get me wrong, the pool is very clean and cute, just small! I've read other reviews that say you can walk to the grocery store from the resort. That may be true of some of the condos, but certainly not ours. We drove over there our first night and picked up a few things (mindful that the fridge wasn't working), but there's no way we could have walked there. If you plan to pick up anything cold, you absolutely need to drive. If you are interested in going out to eat, you will definitely be driving somewhere. There were a few places to eat in the general area, but the majority of the restaurants are back out on the main highway, so you're looking at a drive of at least 15 minutes. There is a wonderful shopping complex called Coligny Plaza approximately 10 minutes drive from the resort. They had charming "touristy" shops and live entertainment in the evenings. We did all of our souvenir shopping there. In summary, Coral Sands Resort is certainly not the most convenient if you're looking for quick access to the beach, dining out or shopping, but from what I could see of Hilton Head Island many of the resorts are similar in those aspects. Coral Sands Resort was clean, quiet and affordable - definitely worth your stay!
