Old Stone Fort is an ancient Native American ceremonial site, and not a fort. So don't go there thinking you'll see some ancient military post.
It is essentially an earthen wall that makes a 1.25 mile loop, and surrounds 50 acres. The name "stone fort" came from it being located on the stony banks of the Duck River. The early settlers who found it figured it had to be some kind of fort, and the name stuck.
Old Stone Fort provides a leisurely walk through the woods and open fields around the ancient wall. You need to stop in at the visitors center to get an overview of what you are looking at. Otherwise, it'll mean very little.
The park has some nice, small waterfalls to look at. If traveling in the summer, be sure and bring insect repellent. It's a short distance off Interstate 24, at Manchester. Signs from the highway direct you to it.
