“Amazing place”

Dallas

This is just a quick review of the city as a whole rather than a single hotel or restaurant. As we first entered the surrounding area of the city it was close to 11pm and we were travelling on a greyhound bus (cheap, but it gets you there!) and the scrapers from downtown Dallas were lighting up the horizon. As we got closer to the end of our journey we just couldn't wait to get off the bus and experience the city. By day it just takes your breath away, the architecture seems born from another planet, and there are plenty of places to visit and plenty of places to eat. All in all I'd recommend it, even if just to take in the scenery.

“Dallas a Brit perspective”

Sorry have been back a couple of weeks but only just got around to writing a review.
Accomodation

Stayed at Marriott Suites in Market Center for most nights and absolutely fine, have done a separate more detailed review on Hotel but although location has some problems, can't walk anywhere the hotel have a shuttle servcie which was really useful. Service and room very good.

Sights

Not as many as thought for such a large city but more then enough for a few days. 6th Floor Museum was very impressive and went back a second time when we took our son who is studying at Oklahoma. For a chill out go to the Arboretum, went on a sunday morning and nice way to relax. Reunion tower won't take very long but you get good views and an easy walk from the 6th floor museum. McKinsey Trolley is an enjoyable ride and can catch the DART back to the centre. Only problem was Dick Cheney was in town which held up traffic for some time! Went to American Airlines Center for Texas Stampede and Daughtry in concert. Impressive stadium with great views go for a ice hockey or Basketball game.

Dining

For Tex Mex thanks for the advice before we went but ended up at Manneys based on Hotel shuttle driver advice. Great place, though he got us seated straight away ahead of the queue! Food was great, cheap, place was lively and Margaritas were great. For more high class went to Amuse (review in Dallas morning Star website) The food was good as was service but was a bit quiet as out of town, getting there was easy as as Hotel shuttle took us there and back. For steaks we went to Trulucks and had great service, complimentary appetiser, and steaks were very tender. For breakfast out of Embassy Suites, Rennaissance and Marriott the Marriott breakfast was easily the best. Also went to Sonny Bryans but was not that impressed, think its over hyped.

Transport

I found it hard to figure the roads, so many and not a grid system like NY. We hired a car and used Dollar from DFW airport. Best $50 I spent was on optional Sat Nav absolute must!! Public transport is not great but we did use DART on a couple of occassions and was okay, just didn't seem to go where we wanted. Plus side of having to drive is lots of car parking and cheap.

Shopping

Went to Galleria and North Park. North Park seemed to have more shops and some upmarket ones but Galleria was easier to get around. All Malls have Abercrombie and Fitch so for any Brits with teenage daughters to buy presents for don't worry which one you go to. Galleria does have ice rink but couldn't get on Saturday morning as kids were having lessons, which at least stopped us from some embarassment.

Overall

Would we go back? only if son stays at Oklahoma University after May 08 but that is because there are so many places to go in States and think we would like to try Chicago next time. Dallas was not that touristy but we enjoyed that and locals seemed genuinley friendly and welcoming to Brits. Also if the exchange rate stays the same you can really have a great time.

“Not the most interesting city...”

Paid my first real visit to Dallas over the weekend and spent several days, over which was spread a rather thin itinerary of things to do. That is my first gripe...for a city of its size, Dallas has very little of real interest for the casual visitor. The Dallas Museum of Art was a surprising stand-out among the places I visited. The Downtown area is horrible, however. It's filled with scam artists, loiterers, and people begging for handouts. There are no pay phones (God help you if you need a cab and don't have a cell phone) and absolutely ZERO police presence in the Downtown area. I did not see so much as a patrol car in 4 days while walking through it (something I do NOT recommend). If you go outside and walk in the Downtown area, expect to be harassed by a beggar or hustler at least once a day. I was.

We went to the Pink Poodle while we were in the DFW area and there was a country band playing called The Steve Stone Band. We had an excellent time and went to eat breakfast with them afterwards. We are going back this weekend to hear them at The Poodle again.

I just got my credit card bill from a trip I took to Dallas over Merorial Day weekend. Hertz @DFW added almost 45% to the cost of my 4-day car rental in taxes! What a rip-off! Be advised and use the off-site companies if you can!
