“Had a fabulous time, loved the staff”

Hotel America

5 of 5 stars
southampton
Sep 27, 2008

After a disastrous start where we had originally booked with part of the XL group, I emailed the hotel on the friday and they replied within a few hours and told me to book directly on their website. Although we paid an extra £90 we were still able to stay in the same hotel, which was the most important as we were leaving in 4 days and didnt have time to hunt for a new hotel (we had booked our flights through a separate company).

Check-in was speedy, had room 831 which had fantastic views down to Porto Colom and over the sandy coved beach below. Met a couple who had been moved to another hotel for their first night and they had arrived a couple of hours before us, but as we booked directly with the hotel it seems we were given preference. The bar staff were entertaining. Sometimes there was a long queue at the pool bar as there were only 2 serving, but they limited everyone to getting 3 drinks at a time (everything is served in half pint plastic cups). Food was of a good variety, hubbie loved the chips and I loved all the european dishes. Good salad choices too. The pizza looked a bit "microwaved" and only ate other dishes from the Pizzaria which stayed open til midnight and was great if you had the munchies after a few drinks.

Evening entertainment was amateur, but still good fun. While we were there they had a magic show with contortionist, humourous beatles tribute act, kareoke, also every night bingo for us oldies and "mini disco time" for the youngsters. Shakey Shakey Wakey Wakey! The Sofia bar was open til 2.30am and charged 3euros for a pint of San Miguel, but becareful if you sit at the bar as they give you free drinks, namely tequila slammers. :) There were daily activities: archery, pool, football etc and they handed out winners certificates in the evening.

There are a few places where you can book excursions and hire cars around the island, but we had hired a car for the 9 days so never used these. The resort is small, but has the usual gift shops selling lilos in all colours, postcards, souveniers etc. Tabacco shop, chinese restaurant, Irish bar with live music which was good and reasonably priced, supermarket etc.

Kids seem to find things to do, although it was raining 2 evenings in a row and they didnt have the disco as this is held outside, thats probably the only downside we saw as the hotel didnt cater much for entertaining kids inside, apart from a couple of pool tables and those "pick up a toy" machines.

Some people were grumbling over the quality of the place, but my husband and I found that these were the sort of people who mistook 3* All Inclusive with 5* Luxury, which we found quite funny as they were also upset as it wasnt all "chicken, chips and beans" sort of food (the hotel has mainly British guests, but also popular with French, Spanish, Polish and Czech, so the food catered to every taste). There's a well known burger place up the road!

If you are open minded, want a clean hotel with beautiful views, then stay at the Hotel America.

Overall an excellent hotel and would definitely come back, but I would pay the extra to book direct with the hotel again just for the security of staying at the hotel for the entire time.

“An excellent 3 star Hotel”

I have just returned from a week at this Hotel, and a very pleasant stay it was indeed. It is a very clean Hotel, and plenty of choice with food and drinks (dare say if there for 2 weeks would be a bit boring on the food side!) The down side to this Hotel is that they overbook all the time and shuffle people to other Hotels or not so good rooms. Our first night was spent in room 101, which they tell you is a family room, not so sure about that as the disco directly underneath is open until 2.30a.m. Also these rooms do not have a balcony they do not even have clear glass on the windows. There was never a time when I was not near the reception area when people were either asking to be moved, or were in the process of swapping rooms!!! Infact I tried to help an elderly lady that was there with her disabled brother, change rooms, she never had any joy. Infact the reception staff were not very nice with her. I later heard them giving rooms to other people like she had requested. So be prepared for this to happen to you!!!!
That aside as a 3 star Hotel it is excellent, staff are very pleasant and it is in a lovely location. Excellent value especially with young children.

“excellent”

Hotel America

well what can i say. what a fantastic hotel and location. rooms are cleaned daily and the rest of the hotel is very clean. swimming pools are freezing so we always went in the sea as its warmer. the food was delicious but not that keen on the pizza and chips. mostly good entertainment. we had to check out at midday but the coach wasnt collecting us until 1.45 the following morning so we had to wait 14 hours without a room as there were not any spare!!! we were given a courtesy room but could only have it for half an hour. overall a briliant hotel and i would love to go back year after year.

“LOVED IT WOULD DEFINATELY GO BACK!”

My husband and I stayed here for a week without the children but they would have loved it!. We booked it last minute on Teletext holidays and was a little dubious BUT...... It exceeded our expectation. We stayed fully inclusive, the food was fresh and edible with plenty of choice, the room was clean and tidy and the maids were in daily. The pools were great and the staff were nice and friendly. There was plenty to eat and drink all day long. The location was great (especially if you want it quiet). The beach was just down the steps and the views were great from the room. A short walk to the shopping centre where there was plenty of things to choose from. The entertainment was great all day and night. All in all I would definately go there again. The only down side is the distance from the Airport especially after a night flight!.

“Get What You Pay For”

Hotel America

Durham

Stayed at this hotel after booking short notice and the price paid was very good for an all inclusive. Arrived and put into the rooms in the annex which were good size with good shower and lovely view onto the sea so was pleasently surprised. The location is good with being next to the beach and the resort centre which is small but there is plenty of the usual shops etc. The food i thought was generally ok in the buffet you are not going to get Carribean choice but there again you are not paying the price. The BBQ was not great purely as you did not get much choice and would need to go to the buffet after to fill up. Pool bar was fine and served your chips and burgers etc. The hotel was busy when we went and the pools are not the biggest but again ok and this is the theme that the hotel and place is ok and good value for money. I think they need more staff in the buffet as we struggled for seating sometimes and the tables which were empty needed cleaning which i cant blame the individual staff as they couldnt keep up. The sunbed experience i think does not work although in principle it is a good idea however all that happens is prior to the sunbeds being unlocked people simply place their towels on the best spots under the shades hence effectively reserving these spots. All in all a decent 3 star hotel at a good price would recommend for families and with the increasing cost of the euro believe this place will get busier.
