“Wonderfult Views and Great Breakfast.”

I must say that I am in total disagreement with your previous contributor about this hotel concerning the breakfasts.

My wife and I have just returned from the Melia Palas Atenea, and found the whole experience excellent (if not a little overpriced).

As your previous contributor said, the view from the balcony from our room across the bay towards the cathedral was magnificent. In addition, our room was well maintained and the bathroom was a good size with a separate toilet. The shower in particular was terrific. It was particularly useful to note that we could get BBC1 and ITV1 as well as Sky news on the TV, a facility I have never come across before.

The other great selling point about the hotel was the breakfast buffet which had the biggest selection of food and drink of any hotel I have ever stayed in outside of Las Vegas. As well as the usual English breakfast, there was a huge selection of fresh fruits, bread, cakes, flans, cheeses and local dishes.

The service throughout was excellent. We would definitely consider returning to this hotel on a future visit to Palma.

“Lovely views, but otherwise over-rated”

Stayed on the occasion of an official visit during a Friday and a Saturday night in one of their mini suites. I agree with previous reviewers that front facing rooms offer a stunning view of the harbour and of the magnificent cathedral. The hotel is also very easily accessible by taxi from the airport. However, I disagree wholeheartedly about the breakfast. The buffet is meagre, with fresh fruit which is unappealingly unripe and a very poor selection of international pastries. I would rate the buffet adequate for a three star hotel, but inadequate for a four star one. Besides, on both occasions, I left without having a coffee as by the time I had finished breakfast no waiter had come to the table to offer a hot drink. There were many of them running around, yet studiously avoiding customers. The bedroom was spacious and the bed very comfortable, some of the toiletries in the bathroom had been filled up with water (which shows poor housekeeping) and cleaning was basic, but by no means scrupulous (a small towel left on the floor wasn't picked up for two days). The bathroom is also rather small in comparison to the room and there were no hooks, except for a small towel rail, so anything has to go on the floor; again, all these issues might be deemed acceptable for a lower rated property but not for one like this. I nearly forgot, security is somehow lacking in the evening. I got back twice around midnight, by taxi, and on the short walk from the pavement in front of the hotel to the lobby I was accosted by pimps, something hotels of similar standard in other locations would seldom tolerate.

“Well worth a return visit”

Melia Palas Atenea

Having revisited this hotel after an absence of 21 years, I am happy to endorse what others have said about the prime location, breathtaking view from seafacing room balconies, fantastic buffet breakfast, friendly and helpful staff, decent sized rooms with comfortable beds and excellent housekeeping which more than compensates for the slightly tired room decor. In short, a hotel that even the most critical of guests would have difficulty in faulting.
But in this review I would like to give a bit more information about the MAS card mentioned in another review. I do so in the hope that anyone booking directly with the hotel and obtaining this loyalty card will not have too high expectations of the rewards to be enjoyed. Firstly, there is no entitlement to late checkout; this is granted only in the event of the room not being required for arriving guests. I have held a MAS card for several years and, even after a 14 night stay, have been politely and apologetically refused late checkout because the room was needed, although a changing room with shower was made available just prior to departure.
The Sol Melia loyalty programme is based on spend at the rate of 10 MAS points for each Euro spent. My recent stay of 8 nights in a seafacing twin room generated a reward of 11740 points, enough for 1 free night in a standard room in a Sol Hotel in Spain but well short of the 17000 points needed for a superior room. Had I wanted to increase the length of my recent stay by 1 night, this would have required 34000 on a room only basis. Since my reward of 11740 points, which was based on a room and breakfast rate, equates to 1468 points per night, it would have cost over 23 times more than the points earned, for room only! The Sol Melia Group has only 1 hotel in the U.K. and this is in London. A standard room there requires 25000 points and a superior room 40000.
Having spent 52 nights in Sol Melia hotels since becoming a member of the MAS loyalty programme, and not having used any points so far, I am hoping soon to spend my points on a 2 night stay in London (standard room, room only)! I think that this puts the whole thing in perspective.

“Perfect for Palma”

Melia Palas Atenea

We stayed in the Melia Palas Atenea 17 - 22 October and booked through xscapewithus.com. Previous reviews on TripAdvisor pointed us towards the Melia and we were not disappointed.

Check-in was quick and welcoming and our bags were in our room before us. The lifts seem to attract a lot of comment in other reviews but we found them really efficient. You select the floor you want and you're directed towards the next lift - what's the problem with that guys?

We had followed advice and booked a sea view. Not quite in the the right place to see the cathedral but there was more than enough going on in the bay.

Breakfast was everything other reviewers have said - a vast range of international and Majorcan options. We ate out apart from breakfast and had some wonderful meals. I'll try to post some reviews separately

To sum up - we'll be back.

“Fabulous Views, Amazing Breakfast”

Friendly check-in (HUGE reception area!) . The room was of a good size, if a little dated and in need of a bit of a refurb, however the fantastic view of the harbour and cathedral more than made up for this. Cleanliness was excellent throughout the hotel.

Breakfast was just about the best I have experienced anywhere in the world - an enormous buffet selection with just about
anything you could think of. The concierge was happy to arrange bicycle hire for us, which was great and enabled us to cycle a good way along the coast on brilliant cycle paths.

Would definately stay here again
