The Beach House Rooms and Suites gives visitors a window onto life in Newfoundland ... literally. Everything in the rooms at this guest house -- from a corner alcove to the jacuzzi in the Harlequin Suite to the wraparound balcony -- looks out over the water where Newfoundlanders used to make their living fishing cod and where visitors and retirees now make their summer homes. The wale of the Bell Island Ferry foghorn and the whale spouts and fins that can be seen from your room without the aid of binoculars make you feel much further away from the city than the 15km from St. John's to Portugal Cove. The proprietors -- Wayne, Elaine and Kory -- are Newfoundland born and bred, demonstrating the pride without arrogance and warmth of a very genuine people.
