Ahhh Sandcastle. We visited Jost Van Dyke on a day trip two years ago and we were lucky enough to book the beachfront cottage #1 for November 2007. What a wonderful time! This is the place we have been looking for our whole lives. Absolute perfection! We arrived at Sandcastle around 2:00 p.m. and were greeted by Sweetie, the resident goat. We were told that our cottage was still being cleaned and they showed us to The Soggy Dollar Bar where they set us up with a tab, beach towels and good conversation with Tina. We enjoyed the famous Painkillers and french fries and before we knew it they were showing us to our cottage. I was overwhelmed! It was literally, right on the beach. It had a day room with a couch and two chairs, a mini fridge and all the books one could want. The bedroom was quite large with a comfortable bed, dresser and hidden closet. The bathroom was inside with the exception of the shower. How cool, an outdoor shower in the sunshine and fresh air, we loved it! The cottage was very clean and had a plentiful supply of fluffy face cloths, towels as well as beach towels.
The things you need to know about staying at Sandcastle are: Relax, enjoy yourself, swing in a hammock, lay in the sun and make peace with yourself.
There is no kitchen in any of the rooms so you need to eat out. If you want to eat breakfast at Sandcastle its $10.00 per day, per person and a daily menu is posted in the kitchen alongside the bulletin board where you write your name down the night before as to whether you will be having breakfast or not. It is served between 9:00-10:00 a.m. Lunch is available at Soggy Dollar or anywhere along the beach at White Bay. If you want to eat dinner at Sandcastle you have to sign up at the bar before either 3:00 p.m. or 4:00 p.m. You have a choice of a chicken, seafood or meat entree and it comes with soup, salad and dessert for $39.99 per person. Well worth it. Oliver is a wonderful chef, the food was delicious each and every time. Don't bother to dress up or wear shoes. We had a fabulous Thanksgiving dinner, candlelit on the beach. What a night!
The Sandcastle guests have the private use of kayaks, water floatys, hammocks and beach chairs. When the boaties landed for the day we often hung out in the roped off area of the cottages in the hammocks and watched the people. On to the people... you will meet the most interesting people from all over the world. We made alot of new friends and I can't say enough about the staff at Sandcastle. Mic behind the bar is a treat. He knows his stuff and can handle a crowd of any size. Never a dull moment at Soggy Dollar. Tina, was a godsend. She helped with our reservatations, transportation to and from Jost. She took care of it all. How she manages to do so much in one day is beyond me. And she, along with the rest of the staff does it with a smile.
Yes, the beach gets busy and crowded during the day when the boats come in and the people swim to shore holding their money and towels above their heads. Its fun to watch and talk with the visitors. They start to thin out around 4:00 p.m. and usually arrive by 10:00 a.m. in the mornings. We didnt mind the boaties at all, we enjoyed them.
Keep an eye out for the two local dogs, Chichi and his friend. They show up everyday, mingle with the crowd and hang out at the bar at night time.
Some say the flies, bugs or mosquitos are bad. We didnt think so but we are from Maine, the black fly capitol of the world so we didnt mind them. The room is stocked with bug spray and its also at the bar if you want it.
Take my advice, book a cottage at Sandcastle. You won't be disappointed. No televisions, no phones, no worries. Close your eyes, listen to the waves, relax and enjoy yourself. Slow down, Jost is on Island time and you should be too while you are there. The real world and all its craziness is waiting for you when you return.
Wonderful trip, wonderful time! Can't wait to go back to Sandcastle next year!
