I went to Sol Cayo Coco with a group of 9 others from April 13 - 20. Overall, we had a great time, but yes, there were some things I would change.
The Positives
- Location is great. Just 15 minutes from the airport.
- Lots of activities during the day. All the typical pool games, plus putting competitions, archery games, step classes.
- Disco - it's actually pretty fun. The Salsatec on Tuesday and Thursday nite is great, lots of guests from the other hotels come in, so there is a good crowd and lots of people dancing.
- Beach. Seems to me to be the best beach of all the resorts, very wide and lots of chairs.
- A la carte restaurants. We ate at both, and really enjoyed them.
- Atmosphere - everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, staff and other guests included. A very happy place.
- The tiki bar in the lobby. This is where we had the best drinks. So yummy, and the bartender puts on quite a show with his fancy moves.
- The stores in the lobby are very resonably priced for resort stores for personal items and snacks.
- Water sports - lots to do. We took the paddle boat and the kayaks out and really enjoyed it.
- Not that this can be anticipated, but the weather was amazing. Hot and sunny with nice breezes. Couldn't have asked for better.
The Negatives
- The rooms we had are sort of run down - chipped paint on furniture, that sort of thing.
- We had some problems with the rooms. Air conditioner not working, problems with the safe and opening the door, total lack of hot water, or water pressure in the shower, no remote for the TV, broken chair on balcony. Most of these were fixed, when we complained, but they were a drag to have to deal with.
- We were given an extra booking at one of the a la cartes due to all the problems we had, and when we showed up, we found out that the restaurant was not even open that night.
- Snacks - they have some snacks in the lobby bar at night which is the only place you can get food, but they are hit or miss. Sometimes the pizza is cold, and the sandwiches are terrible. Stale bread with cheese or meat with ketchup.
- Drinks - they are different depending who is making them. If you get a good one, order a whole bunch. Some drinks that are supposed to be blended (pina colada, etc.) are just mixed, and sometimes you will get fresh fruit in your drink, other times just a mix.
- The shows are not the greatest we have seen. Some are pretty boring, I would have preferred more dancing rather than lip synching. They staff are so talented, let's see them show it off.
- Dirty table cloths. I didn't think this would bug me when I read about it in other reviews, but it can be pretty gross when you sit down and touch a blob of ketchup. Obviously this is the guests who do this, but it would be nice if they were cleaned up.
Tips
- Do take advantage of the Tryp, where you can go from 9 - 5. It's about a 20 minute walk down the beach. Nice resort, and the drinks in the lobby bar are excellent (so is the service). Also, the pizza restaurant there is so good. The vendors at the Tryp seemed to have a better selection at better prices than at the Sol. Also a better cigar store.
- Please take the advice that I did not, and bring a cup for your drinks. They serve in very small plastic cups.
- The best prices we found for cigars (the small 'club' size) were at the Cayo Coco airport at the snack stands. For a Romeo and Juliet club pack, we paid 11.50 peso at the resort and in duty free at Cayo Coco, but the snack stands charge 8.50. Go figure...
- Bring an inflatable chair for the pool. Lots of people were using them, and it looked so relaxing.
- When you get a beach towel, hold on to it until you can exchange it the next morning. One day they did not have any clean towels until about lunch time, so we were glad we still had ours from the day before.
All in all, we had a great trip. I did like the resort, but I would only go there again if the price was right. We paid $800 tax included, and felt we got excellent value for our money. Had I paid more than $1000, I might have been disappointed. Cayo Coco is so beautiful, I will go there again, but might try the Tryp next time. If you are going to Sol, have a great time and enjoy yourself. As you can see from my review, there were problems, but none that ruined the trip. And if anyone does go the the Tryp for a drink, can you please order a Harry Potter from the lobby bar and post the recipe? I must learn how to make those at home!
Happy and safe travels to all.
