We went to Melia Cayo Coco for our honeymoon from 14th may for 14 days. What can I say?!?!? what a fantastic holiday, the cuban people make you feel so welcome, part of their lives, part of their family!!!
We were upgraded to a lagoon room on our first full day there (not on arrival, due to thomas cook not doing the job properly and sending our wedding details to the resort!!!!) So we had a chance to see the standard room and the lagoon room, both were very clean and comfortable. Obviously the lagoon room is superior, we found it more airy, cleaner and comfortable.
WHEN we go again, we will upgrade to lagoon. We experienced rain for 2 days while we were there and didn't see any mosquitos near the lagoon and the only time there was a bad smell was as you walked onto the land from the water (where the algae is)
The resort is gorgeous, very well kept by the extremely friendly gardeners, who made many gifts for my wife, including birds, hats, necklaces and bracelets. everywhere was clean and tidy, all the maids did a terrific job and our room was always well kept. The maid we had, left us many gifts, towel sculptures and notes for us. all the staff we met were very friendly and polite from the maids already mentioned to the reception staff.
the beach is lovely, yes it's narrow as others have said, to be honest thats a rubbish reason to mark down. to us it was a positive, less distance to walk to the beautiful clear sea. the fish will swim around your feet, especially if you take a roll from breakfast and break it up around you. you do have to get there quite early if you want a good sun lounger, most people get there early, leave a towel or hat and go to breakfast, then come back and stay all day. the same goes for the pool loungers, get up early and put a towel down.
The resturants, the buffet was great, it did get a bit limiting and boring towards the end, but there is quite a good selection and depending on how long you're there it is a perfectly adequate place to eat.
We didn't get a chance to go to the italian as our reservations were always late and to be honest we were normally too hungry and went to the buffet instead.
The international was great, good menu, great staff, lovely view of the lagoon while you eat as well.
The steakhouse, well, this was the most awful experience on the resort. horrible food, rubbish service, it was so bad we didn't even stay for our pudding!!!! the food was burnt and service was slow and sloppy.
the snack bar was great for what it was for, snacks. a quick hotdog or pizza and then back in the pool.
we tipped the staff a peso each and each tip was received with joy and terrific service was given before and after the tip was given. If ever the service wasn't up to standard, we didn't tip until it was.
the excursions we did were great, speedboats through the mangroves and 2 visits to the mainland, moron and florencia. we loved these, beautiful scenery to look at and a humbling experience that you should not miss out on. our tour guides were amazing, with a brilliant grasp of english and excellent knowledge that was put across to us very well.
Unfortuantly, while we were there I needed to go to the doctor, very good service here and the doctor knew very good english. but be aware that it costs 25 pesos just to see the doctor before you even pay for the treatment, so try to take some emergency money just in case!!!
The reason i needed the doctor was infected blisters on my feet from my shoes, I mention this as I needed to buy new shoes and there is a fantstic shop in hotel playa coco which is a bus ride or taxi away, they have a much better selection of goods than the melia shop.
Speaking of buses and taxis, the taxis are cheap short distance but to go far take the tour bus, 5 peso return per person. we took the bus out to pillar beach which was the most gorgeous beach i've ever seen, you can wade out for over 150 metres and snorkel with the fish, just be carefull not to step on the crabs as i got nipped on the toe!!! LOL!!!
the only downside that we can think of is that the resort is not very well represented in the brochures, they state things like archery, darts, shooting. these things are there but really are old, tired and worn out and to be honest each time we went to the sports club to play pool, we hardly ever saw people using them.
This was a fantastic holiday, only let down in part by thomas cook. we enjoyed everything about the resort and the trip was made extra special by the cuban people. we gave little gifts to the staff when we left, I gave one of the gardeners some t-shirts i didn't want to take home and we gave some other clothes and colouring books and art stuff to other members of staff too. we never felt pressured into giving things except by a few people on the mainland but when you say no, they do leave you alone.
Amazing overall, we love you Cuba and melia cayo coco!!!!!
