I stayed at the Melia Cayo Coco between October 30th and November 9th – not a great choice of weeks as hurricane Poloma was heading our way and brought cloud, wind and a few showers our way. In fact we only had one day of sunshine during our entire stay. However, we were determined not to let this spoil our holiday and we made good use of the facilities as well as mingling and socialising with the staff and guests.
Like other Cayo Coco hotels this one has also been through the mill recently with all the bad weather and storms but apart from an influx of seaweed on the beach there were few signs of damage. The main buffet was under renovation while we were there but we ate most of the time at the steak bar near the beach. The food was typically Cuba style and not to everyone’s taste but there was plenty of variety with fish, prawns, pork steak and pasta readily available and cooked in front of you. We also visited the International Speciality restaurant several times and while the portions here were pretty small we always went away feeling well fed. You could also have breakfast here, ordered from a menu and brought to your table – a nice 5 star touch.
The lobby and lobby bar area were something special. Recently refurnished it was a great place to sit and relax, and with waiter service at your table it meant no queuing at the bar. They also moved a shortened version of the evening show into here when the weather was a little too rough for the open-air theatre. Normally these shows were excellent and just long enough at around 45 minutes to break up the evening without taking it over.
There was the usual round of pool games and aerobics going on but we also had a few tries at the rifle shooting and archery (although a few flights on the arrows would have improved my aim I feel) and we spent much of every evening in the little bar on the lagoon where there was a couple of pool tables and a large screen TV showing sport.
The little beach bar was just a little too small with only room for about 8 or 10 people and I think that in busy times it would soon get a bit chaotic. However, with a huge lobby bar and pool bar (both open 24 hours), the lagoon sports bar and a bar next to the theatre there was always somewhere to get a drink from and there were several international brands included in the ‘all-inclusive’ package.
The rooms were a little basic but clean and tidy with a mini bar and TV but at the end of the day all you really do is sleep there. I didn’t see the interior of the upgraded lagoon rooms and suites but I believe they were quite nice too.
The weather did take the edge off the holiday a little but it was still very warm and humid so overall the experience was a success and a nice relaxing break. The staff were all fantastic and we met some great people too.
The only down side to the holiday was the fact that we were given only 2 hours notice to pack and check out the day before the hurricane was due to hit. Then we had a 9 hour coach trip to Varadero to the Trip Peninsula for an overnight stay before flying home, but who do you blame for the weather...?
