First off we booked last minute, and only paid $1000 cdn for 2 A.I.
to visit November 24-01 of Dec. We had some small hic ups, however the overall experience is wonderful as we went strictly to relax. If Iasked would I go back not to this resort, but I would go back to Cayo coco. The Cubans say the Blau is the best resort on the island.
The airport was easy and no hang ups, do go through the Customs one at a time unless travelling with small children. Transfers to the hotel were very easy and smooth. They do ask for tips on the bus...
The Tryp, the hotel is large and spread out. Grounds are very well manicured and you can tell alot of planning on the landscaping happened. The shape of the hotel Is accurate when you read it is tired and in need of a "Refurb." The pool was dirty No place to deposit refuse, cups and plates... so you would regularly see stuff floating in th pool or on benches.
We had a room first on the ground floor block 12 the furthest from the resort main buildings and any food or bars. The room looked as though it had not been cleaned for months, broken tiles, sand on the floor, and was so musty you could smell mould very obviously. I am not to picky as I expect it to be musty in the climate they live in but this was affecting my asthma... not good. We asked for a change and they gladly obliged. We were then moved to Block 6 second floor, just off the main pool area. not as bad but definatly in need of serious repairs. The toilet seat was Cracked and the Towels had threads hanging from the edges... like 5-6 inches hanging. Little things, water that you had to ask for every day and tip the maid for ...
The pool is large and crowded and we went in off season. Chairs are on top of others and no real spaces to sit quietly. The Quiet pool was nicer, but we opted for the Beach, less busy and was So pretty and sand is so soft... nice to run your fingers and toes through. They had covered areas to perch under later in the heat of day.
We tried some a la carte restaurants. The BBQ was tasty, and we both stuck to chicken and pork definately try this if you can. The Cuban place had wonderful ambiance, lit with lanterns and in an old white washed building. It had interesting menu choices, and was good a bit salty for me. We also tried the italian place, it was soso... but not the worst food either. the Buffet was also just ok. We always managed to find something.. it was never hot food though. They do x contaminate utensills and did not want to risk it.
We were offered excursions and found them very reasonable,
we did a speed boat-snorkelling half day for $34 ccp's each it was wonderful and it is true the fish and "water rat" liked the banannas! We took a Jeep 1/2 day tour $39 ccp's. Guided and Not in a Jeep as advertised... but it was a fun tour an I would reccommend it as well watch out for the Bats in the Cave... YIKES> LOL
One thing we hadn't read about was the Tryp has 2 sister resorts you can try for the day... We went to the one in Cayo Guillermo $ 5 ccu's each return for the day.( leave a 9 and return around 5 ish)... . If you are planning a trip and havent booked yet is is called the Melia Sol Cayo Guillermo. I would reccommend booking this resort.. much better shape pool is cleaner, lots of chairs and space, just more intimate and over all a better feel. Same food though. and we didn't stay long enough to try the a la carte. There was another on cayo coco we did not try that resort.
but nice to have the option to try. It helped us as we like Cayo Coco and wanted to see other options.
They have shopping on site. They have Cigar maker on site and his Cigars were $2 ea, and you could watch him make them in fromnt of you... Other brands were a little more than at the airport. but we bought 26oz of rum for $5ccp's cigars- Romeo & julietta's were anywhere from $3.05 ea to $6.90 ea depending on the size you prefer. Better $ at he airport though.
all in all a good tryp. but I would not go to this resort unless you couldn;t afford a better one.
