“Must see if you go to Puerto Rico”

Culebra

Culebra is a beautiful island off the east coast of Puerto Rico. It's a great day trip if you want to get away from the lively San Juan. You can take a long ferry ride from Fajardo to get there- but I herd from the locals that, that was a long and very uncomfortable ride.
I got out there on Air Flamenco from San Juan. It was very inexpensive and fast, only a 30 min flight. Once there I took a quick cab ride out to the famous Flamenco Beach. It was absolutely breathtaking! With it's powder soft sand and bright turquoise water, I can easily see why Discover Channel named this as one of the best beaches to visit in the world.

We're going back to Culebra for a 5th? year! We fell in love with the quainteness of the island. We are not "resort/high end hotel" people. Culebra is off the beaten track - mostly guest houses - not hotels. No golf courses or spas - that's why it 's so perfect! I would highly recommend Culebra for people who are self sufficient and love a little adventure. Please respect the island-help keep it pristine. Do not be a "tourist". Relax, take a deep breath and go with the flow and enjoy "island time". If you need room service, casino night and guided tours in A/C tour buses - Culebra is NOT for you. The people on Culebra are extremely friendly if you are too - but do not misconstrue that for full service. :) If you're looking for some major relaxation and down time and beauty then this is where you want to be.

I wouldn't say it was a terrible experience, but for first-time Culebra visitors, I would have liked to know a few things up ahead of time. The week we were there, the ferry boat did not run because of a storm. This meant that, not only were people stranded, but the island ran out of gasoline and other staples. Also, there aren't very many restaurants on the whole island. One night we were there, several of them were closed, which left the few remaining restaurants full of angry patrons who couldn't get a table, or even served once they had a table. Yikes. Don't expect any shoppping or nightlife. It doesn't exist on Culebra. Also, don't come there expecting low prices. It's kind of like Miami prices with Iowa amenities. Pretty good snorkelling, though. And of course people there are really nice and laid back.

“A great place for sun and surf”

I have traveled to Belize, Hawaii (all major islands), Costa Rica, and Mexico (Pacific side). Our trip to Culebra surpasses these destinations when it comes to unspoiled beaches. Flamenco Beach is as great as billed- white sands, small crowds, great water for boogie boarding and body surfing (not the best for real surfing), full facilities with bathrroms and rustic showers.

The island is small and easy to get around. Local color is present at virtually every turn. Seems much more authentic than the main island of Puerto Rico as its many strip malls reminds one of anytown, USA.

Flew in to San Juan, rented a car and dropped it in Fajardo. Took the ferry to Culebra and was greeted by the caretaker and took an exciting ride in a antique car to my villa.

Rented a beautiful villa on the side of the mountain overlooking the bay. Absolutely beautiful. Spent the next morning looking for a rental and enjoying some of the scenery. Decided to go with a Jeep from Carlos Jeep Rentals at the airport which was just around the side of the hill from my Villa. Nice Jeep. Spent nearly all day touring the Island and was amazed at the beaches. Stopped at a wonderful bakery downtown to get some bread for breakfast. Stopped a police officer on the street to ask if I was parked legally and they replied yes. Came out of the bakery to find a ticket in the amount of $75 for a parking violation. I could come back in two weeks to contest it in court. Kinda odd since my jeep was parked near an abandoned car sitting on cinder blocks. Had to pay Carlos Jeeps for the fine and they go to court and fight the tickets. If they win, they keep the money. Hum?

The food on the street is hard to beat. Left on a private boat to Vieques.
