“Great time in Canouan”

Raffles Resort Canouan Island

We spent a week at the Raffle’s resort on Canouan in March 2008. We had a wonderful experience and would highly recommend the resort to others considering it. We’ve stayed at several resorts in the Caribbean and we would put Raffle’s in the top two or three! The resort grounds are well maintained and are expansive. The golf course, a Trump International course, was in great condition and offers some of the best ocean views ever, not to mention the course itself plays nicely. The food at the resort is great, plenty of choices, though the French restaurant is a little too much; food was ok but the prices were outrageous. The cocktail collection is what you would find in New York City with friendly bartenders with by the pool or at one of the bars. The rooms were great, all have ocean views, and bathrooms were very large with two sinks, large deep soak tub and seperate shower. We would highly recommend the resort. One tip, they are currently building a longer runway for the island, to be completed in early 2009, when larger planes from Miami and San Juan will be arriving daily….go before the crowds find this oasis.

“Nice retreat”

We just returned from a week in Canouan celebrating our 10 year anniversary. We had read a lot about the resort and it is pretty accurate. The place is remote, on a small island with not much but the Raffles resort. The weather was great, the food fantastic, the waters crystal clear, and the price was high. Since we knew that going in, it was not a surprise.

We caught the small (4 passenger) plane from Barbados to Canouan and arrived in time for dinner. We spent the next several days relaxing and enjoying the resort. We were upgraded to a suite and had lots of room and a nice view. The island is warm once you get off the shore as the breeze keeps you cool.

We enjoyed the morning buffet each day and ate way too much. The lunch was generally a light meal and then we had a big dinner. We ate at each of the restaurants and enjoyed them all. La Piazza was our least favorite, only because it was indoors and not taking advantage of the tropical setting; the food was good, but I didn't feel like I was at an island resort. Jambu's is the open air place for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Casual and by the pool. Nice food and no reservations required. Bellini's is the open air restaurant right off the reception and was fairly casual and good food. Nice location for dinner as long as you get a breeze. La Varenne is the more fancy, French restaurant up on the hill attached to the casino. Great setting and the food was very good. We went to the casino after dinner, but did not stay as there was nobody in there and we felt awkward being the only ones in there. My favorite was the BBQ that was at Godahl's beach on certain nights. Great grilled food and a very large buffet. Biggest shrimp I had ever had and the food was all good. Also, dessert table was great with fresh pastries. While all the food was great, you should know that it is expensive. Even though the breakfast buffet is complementary, it is very hard to eat for less than $250 per day if you have any drinks with your meals.

There have been many comments about the boat trip with Phil and Nicola on the Splendid Adventurer. We took the full day tour and thought it was the highlight of the trip. The two of them are very fun and the sailing was great. We were able to swim with the sea turtles (saw 8-10) and then went on the island and saw many of the iguanas. From there we went to the coral reef and snorkeled for an hour or so and saw lots of great sea life. We then sailed over to Mayreau (small island) and had a local lunch. From there it was a 90 minute sail back to the resort. I would highly recommend the trip to anyone staying there and would say you need the full day trip in order to do anything but sail.

I played 3 rounds of golf on the course and thought it was a very nice course, but pretty tough for a mediocre golfer such as me. The views were incredible, but the winds were treacherous. Take lots of golf balls and don't worry too much about your score. The first 2 rounds I played I didn't see anyone else on the course and played by myself. The third round I caught up to a group on the back nine, but otherwise had the course to myself.

My wife took advantage of the spa with 2 massages. The first over the water in one of the spa huts and the second in the hillside spa huts. She said the massage was very good and the views were spectacular. The over the water spa massage was a very unique touch for even the most seasoned spa-goer.

One other comment. We had a great experience staying for 7 days, but several others we met were staying up to two weeks, which I think would have been a bit long to stay at this one resort. Not that you couldn't do it, but there wasn't anything else to do on the island outside the resort, so you can exhaust your options within a week. That said, we thought the week's stay was perfect, enough to experience all the great restaurants, water sports, sailing, golf, and spa, but not so much time that you get bored.

All in all, we had a fantastic experience at Raffles' Canouan resort and would recommend it highly for a relaxed, laid back, upscale Caribbean vacation.

“Great Staff...hugely expensive...”

Raffles Resort Canouan Island

Have just returned from two weeks at the Raffles Resort on Canouan Island. Not sure where to begin so I'll start with the positives. The staff are lovely. Very helpful and smiling. The general manager, Gilbert was superb and really helped us regarding a few problems at the begining. The setting is beautiful with the most amazing golf course I've ever seen. From the 13th tee you can see a 360˚ view of the entire island and the islands in the distance. A fantastic kids club with excellent girls running it. Our children were perfectly happy just wandering in and out all day. My son would get the list of events for the day and decide which he'd like to do. For a few days we didn't see him from 9am to 5pm except for a bite to eat! They go turtle hunting, shell collecting, treasure hunting, play tennis, golf, basketball, volleyball, beach games, pool games and some eveinings (in high season) would go to bonfire night or watch a film till 9pm. Very safe enviroment and I wish all kids clubs were like that. It's also situated right next to the pool and the beach plus Jambus restaurant so very easy for the kids to come out and find you. On Godhals beach (which you reach by golf buggy) they had kayaks, hobie cats, windsurfing and a pedalo type thing for rent. They also had Godhals beach restaurant which served lovely food. We never visited the casino, I don't know why, but a spa treatment is highly recommended!
The sore points are more niggles than really huge problems. We felt that the bathrooms were dated and some of the fixtures were coming off, like cracked tiles and wobbly showers. In our bedroom (which we'd been upgraded to as the first villa really wasn't suitable for young children) none of the sockets worked. I mentioned this a couple of times but nothing came of it. Didn't really bother me as I didn't want to watch the tv or play the music but someone might! Also we ran out of sun lotion really quickly. The hotel is on the atlantic side of the island so has the huge trade winds blowing constantly. Lovely as it never gets sweaty hot, but VERY dangerous mixed with the sun! The whole family got burnt one way or another on the first day after only two hours in the sun with factor 40 on....and we're used to the sun! I wanted to buy more lotion but couldn't get any in the boutique. I even went into town but didn't have much luck. The town is tiny and the inhabitants have to go to St Vincent to do their shopping. I ended up buying a fancy tube of factor 25 in the spa at a cost of £25!! EEK. What we didn't know was buy the beaches in the little huts they have complimentary factor 30 you can slap on. No one told us and we only found out with two days of the holiday to go. Not good enough, they really should stock some basics. The worse thing of all though, was the general cost of everything. Unbelievable prices for eating. As there's no way of going to eat anywhere else then you're stuck. Even the kids meals were sky high cost wise. Our room bill came to £2500 for two weeks!!! An American family we met had a bill of $18000.00!!
Overall not what we expected for a 5 star hotel with the Raffles name attached. We won't be going back, not because of the staff which are some of the nicest I've met in the Caribbean, but because it's not worth the money you have to pay.
Maybe somewhere to visit for a few days before moving on to another island. Beware of trying to get internal flights off the island though....tricky stuff!!!!!

“Raffles Corporate should be embarrassed”

Raffles Resort Canouan Island

2 of 5 stars
washington, dc

2/8 found this review helpful

Lord, where do I begin? It did not occur to me to read any reviews before we booked, but I see it would not have helped me any.

I truly have to question those who say they have traveled the Caribbean and stayed in high-end resorts and found this fabulous. Let me put it to you this way: if you are fortunate enough to be able to stay in places like Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons, Raffles Canouan Island is NOT the place for you.

First of all, my parents live in the Bahamas and I spent much of my childhood all throughout the islands. I've done Nevis, the BVI's, the AVI's, Turks and Caicos, Caymans, etc., etc. I have never in 41 years been eaten so alive by mosquitos. They have nets over the beds and believe me, it is not for ambience! They spray the resort via a small truck 3-4 times a week and ask you to stay inside while they do. If other islands can get this under control, surely they can, too.

The food. Wow. I don't even know where to begin. Two in our party---nanny and husband---are not picky eaters in the slightest. Even they could not stand the food. Our kids ate plain penne pasta the entire week. That's it. La Piazza WAS good, but how many times can you eat in one restaurant, especially when it's very quiet and more formal and the kids could get the same penne from room service?

The beaches have all the drawbacks some have noted but the service, to me, was the worst thing about the beaches. It's not that there are not enough staff and that they are not friendly. But we were there and the resort wasn't even full and we hardly ever had anyone come by asking if we wanted to order a drink or anything. Can you believe they were actually passing up opportunities to make more money? This was a no brainer, as it seemed for many there money was not an issue--including us. We would happily have thrown back the Pina Coladas to numb us to how bad the food was. But no one offered. Now, you could go up to the pool bar on your own, but less touted resorts have always had staff trolling the beaches offering to sell drinks and snacks. There were people standing around doing nothing, but you had to hunt them down.

Also, beware the jellyfish. May be seasonal, but they were an issue while we were there and we were warned they were the very painful variety if stung.

Beware the plunge pools. It's a nice touch and this was an imperative for us, having usually only booked resort villas or private rentals with pools. The problem is they are not good for littler kids. There are no steps in, just a ladder. That's fine for older kids, but just be aware of this if your children are little. They can't just play on the steps while you are in pool or on chaise. You have to hold them the whole time or use big pool.

The spa IS fantastic. Not the treatments--they are average. Like what you would get on a Crystal or other high-end cruise. Just OK. But the location and ambience of the spa is spectacular. I would say this is the only good thing about it.

It's not easy to run a resort in the islands. Just keeping up with grounds is a huge issue. So I am giving them lots of slack on this. But for this to be a Raffles, it needs a LOT of work. From now on, I will definitely do much more research and not assume something can ride its corporate name.

Bottom line: the villa might cost you more up front, but Four Seasons Exumas is far, far more worth it and the "extras" won't cost as much so you might call it even.

If you are truly, truly used to top-notch quality and service, this is not the place for you. It could be someday, but it needs lots of work.

    • Liked — It is a pretty locale and has lots of potential.
    • Disliked — Wasn't what we expected for a Raffles. BAD mosquito problem in rooms at night---kids really suffered.

“Could Be One Of The Best Caribbean Resorts”

Raffles Resort Canouan Island

4 of 5 stars
New Canaan CT
Feb 24, 2008
3/4 found this review helpful

Raffles Canouan could be one of the best resorts in the Caribbean - as long as you understand what you are going for.

For the past 7 years or so - we have taken Caribbean vacations - almost always renting houses or villas and renting cars to explore the island we were on.

Canouan is not a typical vaction for us - as it is a completely enclosed resort - there's really nothing else on the Island - and if you are willing to pay the price for Raffles - all else on Canouan is going to pale in comparison.

We flew down to Barbados and took the Raffles jet to Canouan after a 45 minute stopover. Very smooth and easy - with an airport concierge guiding us through the process.

The resort itself is beautiful with the grounds perfectly groomed - two nice beaches and a really nice golf course. You can see it all on the website or read about them hear on trip advisor. It's all true - and the pictures are pretty accurate.

We had dinner one night with the manager who is an extremely nice fellow and very interested in the hotel and the guest experience. When I asked him what was the biggest challenge and the thing he was most proud of - the answers were the same - the level of service they have achieved down there.

Having been to enough Caribbean islands - you do not get the "Caribbean service" at Canouan. Service is on par with any hotel anywhere in the world. The employees are happy to help and the standards excellent. We travelled with our two daughters (8 and 5) and the people of Raffles could not have been more helpful or more happy to help out with special requests - including a birthday cake (chocolate as requested) for our 8 year old during the beach BBQ at Godahls one night.

Speaking of food - we found it uniformly good to very good and the service was solid all around.

We stayed in a 2 bedroom personality suite which had its own pool and was 10 seconds to the beach. Most of the rooms are undergoing an overhaul and this villa had been done over with traditional Raffles furniture and fans. the room was spectacular.

As you might expect - all of these things cost $. There's nothing cheap at the resort and paying in U.S. $ right now - some of the food is downright laughable - but of course everything has to be flown in and there are a ton of servers for not all that many guests (350 at max occupancy - there were 100 or so when we went)

The two best parts of the trip were golf on the spectacular course (yes you lose a lot of balls even if you are a pretty good golfer) and boat trips. Massive elevation changes and a constant wind make sure of that. The back nine has some of the prettiest vistas we have seen in the Islands - and a large collection of Canouan tortoises (we spotted 20 one evening)

Phil and Nicola run two boats right from Jambu's dock - and they are not to be missed. Yes the Tobago Cays are as nice as everyone says (Phil and Nicola are repopulating one of the Cays with Iguanas and we participated in one of their releases) - and the trip to Mayreau is also great - but really it is the hospitality provided by Phil and Nicola that make it come together so well. Management should do everything possible to keep these two folks happy as they really provide the backbone of the water sports activities at the resort. Can't say enough about these two.

If there is any disappointment we felt over the whole experience it is the lack of snorkeling off the beach at the resort. There is a very small coral patch off of Godahls beach - and some nice fish grouping under the Armita spa over water treatment huts - but that is it. There is a beautiful fringing reef around Canouan - but getting there is difficult (need a boat) and the current is extremely strong at this time of year - in fact - having been down to the Grenadines twice in February - the wind seems to be constantly from the north and the current strong ( making snorkeling hard and visibility tough) This was not the case when we were at Petit St. Vincent in May one year.

Perhaps management should invest in an artificial reef off of Godahl's beach.

The only other quibbles would be the lack of things to do and see outside of the resort on Canouan - there really is nothing - and of course the cost - but you know that going in and certainly get top service and amenities for top $.

Finally, because everyone takes small private planes in and out - and most people will leave on a Saturday or Sunday - try and make sure you have a good connection. We left the resort around 11 for a 4:45 Barbados connection - and after spending 8 nights at Raffles - the last thing you want to do is spend 4+ hours sitting at Barbados airport ( a rude awakening to the real world)

As I said at the beginning - if you know why you are going there you will be pleasantly surprised as the resort will likely over deliver. It is a fantastic place to relax - it is quiet - not crowded - service is excellent (constant cold water changes on the beach - food anywhere you like it - cold towels to cool you down etc...) However, if you need to explore - or need snorkeling right off the beach - you won't be able to indulge yourself - because neither of these things exist.

All in all if you are looking for what Raffles has to offer - this could be the best resort in the Caribbean.
