“A Delightful Bed and Breakfast”

Mayhurst Inn

I had just finished a conference in the Washington, DC area and wanted to relax. My brother suggested we find a bed and breakfast inn in the wine country south of DC. After browsing the internet and a wine magazine, we decided to stay at the Mayhurst Inn in Orange, Va, a very small town.

We were very pleased that we did. Our first impression was a beautiful, historic home, set among tall, stately trees, and surrounded by an immaculately manicured lawn and colorful flower beds. We found out later that Mayhurst played a part in the Civil War as General Ambrose Hill, commander of the III Corp of Lee's Army was headquartered at Mayhurst Inn, owned by the Willis family at that time. As we walked toward the home, one of the innkeepers came up to greet us in a very friendly manner. She was very nice and answered any question we had about the history of the mansion, or the premises.

We were given the Piedmont Suite, a two bedroom suite in the renovated attic of the house. A bathroom was shared by both rooms. This is an excellent choice for families - the children can watch TV while the parents rest in the other room. A gas burning fireplace made the atmosphere so warm, and cozy. Needless to say the furnishings reflect the Victorian era. There were magazines and books in the room, and throughout the house. Several windows still bare the etchings of Confederate soldiers.

Downstairs in the sitting room is where the 5:00 pm wine tasting is held. The innkeepers are there liberally pouring the wines, some local, others from California. The innkeeper is an expert on the wines of the area as well as a very good socializer, trying to have the guests meet each other and talk about their experiences. He even calls the restaurant when the hunger pangs set in. And if you want directions to the wineries in the area, he gives you a map.

The morning brings the beautiful sunshine that pours through the skylight in one of the rooms. At 8:30, breakfast is served. Before the main course, a wine glass filled with yogurt, and assorted berries was served - just to tease you. This morning the main course is egg omelet. I requested it filled with fresh mushrooms, onions, and cheese, but other fillings were available.

The rest of the property is just 37 acres of beautiful trails, forests, and a pond where you can go fishing (bait is provided). We had a wonderful time there, and will definitely visit again.

“Two days in Paradise”

My boyfriend and I stayed here for two days and chose this Bed and Breakfast because of the excellent reviews the B&B received. When we arrived at the Mayhurst, the reviews were better than expected! We are from NY and came down to Virginia for my 21st Birthday and we had the time of our lives, all thanks to the beautiful Mayhurst. The Generals Room was perfect for us, so clean, and the bed was extra comfortable!! The breakfast in the morning was outstanding. Jack and Pat are fantastic Inn keepers, very accomodating and helpful to us considering it was our first time in Virginia. We recommend you taste the wine and cheese served in the evening. We also went down to the lake, which is part of the Mayhurst, where my boyfriend and I found fishing rods awaiting our arrival. Jack was pleasant enough to give us live bait! Overall, the Mayhurst was everything we expected and more, stay here if you ever have the opportunity!!!!

“The Mayhurst Inn--My Favorite Bed & Breakfast of All Time”

I stayed at the Mayhurst Inn in Orange, VA, April 24 - 27. I have frequented many B&B's in the past but found this to be the most wonderful of all. I went to get away from the hustle and bustle of Washington, DC life and I returned home fully refreshed and relaxed. The innkeepers, Jack and Pat are most hospitable. I truly felt like family when I was there. The inn is kept in perfect shape and if you're a historical buff, you'll love this place. I loved walking the beautiful 37 acres and cherished quiet times by the pond which my room overlooked. The afternoon wine and cheese time was an awesome touch. After our chat time over wine and cheese, I'd retire to "my" hammock outdoors overlooking a beautifully kept garden. I would highly recommend this treasure find of an inn.

“A new favorite!”

We recently spent an amazing weekend at the Mayhurst Inn in Orange, VA. We are big wine fans, and enjoy visiting the Virginia vineyards. We had never been wine tasting in that region of VA and had heard wonderful things about the wineries. So, we had picked the region... now we needed a place to stay. We are pretty picky (ok... I am pretty picky). We searched for a lovely, romantic B&B. We looked for a suite with jacuzzi tub, patio/balcony, it needed to look a certain way, etc. The Mayhurst Inn had rooms to fit any desire. We were so anxious to stay there that we changed our plans to fit their availability, and we are so happy that we did. From the moment we pulled up to the house, we were overwhelmed. The property is expansive and gorgeous, and the house is breathtaking. Our room was perfect... everything we wanted and more. The hosts, Jack and Pat North, could not have been more hospitable. We were welcomed with an evening wine reception, where we sipped wine, nibbled on snacks, and met the hosts and other guests. Jack and Pat were very helpful whether we wanted to find a sports bar to watch the playoffs (my Jets were in it... at the time), a small local vineyard, or a nice restaurant for a delicious dinner. Speaking of delicious... Pat's breakfasts are amazing. So much so that I have tried (in vain) to replicate one of her recipes since I've been home. I travel a good deal for work and pleasure, and have stayed at a number of different B&Bs and hotels. The Mahurst Inn ranks up there with the best of them. I am looking forward to another visit!

“The Best of the Best”

My husband and I returned last week from a two-night stay in the Southern Charm Room. Our entire Mayhurst experience was outstanding. Jack and Pat Harmon, the somewhat new owners (6 months) were gracious, friendly and very helpful. We were celebrating our first wedding anniversary and our stay at Mayhurst was the best gift we could have given to one another. Our room was beautiful, and we feel it was the nicest of all of the room choices. Lovely fine bed linens on the terrific kingsize bed, real fireplace and huge whirlpool tub for two. We were greeted by our hosts with a Virginia wine and cheese get together where we were introduced to two wonderful international couples from Australia and the Republic of Georgia. The house was so large but it was very private but inviting. The breakfast was unbelievable. Succulent baked apples, eggs benedict, scones, fresh fruit, homemade pancakes and the most mouth watering blueberries! Several choices of coffees, teas and juice were available. After the gracious service, a stroll on the patio with a warm mug was a great way to start the day. Jack was extremely helpful with maps and directions to places of interests. We found an terrific lunch place in Gordonsville. "The Downtown Deli" was an unexpected surprise. I highly recommend the French Dip. Another great place was a funky little local pizza place called Mario's. The Veal and Seafood entrees were yummy.
Enough raving about Mayhurst, my husband said I shouldn't tell anyone how great it was because if all of our friends knew, we would never be able to get a reservation! I just want to thank Jack and Pat for the most memorable two days. We have stayed at some great places around the world, and Mayhurst was first class.
