En route to Roanoke in late July '07 I rang to book two rooms for the two couples which comprised our party. The lady on the phone was pleasant. We wanted a smoker's room and a non-smoker's room. We were first offered two rooms with king size beds then she changed this to two rooms with queen size. I accepted, but was then told two weren't available - one was and she also had a suite available. A suite sounded very exotic and the prices were very reasonable so I accepted. On arrival, first impressions were poor - externally it appeared ill-kept and very run down. It being late we accepted, got our keys and went up. One room on the 2nd floor and the suite on the 3rd. On the way up we passed lots of garbage, an odd collection of matresses in the foyer and a very unwelcoming and positively disturbing grouping of fellow guests decorating the landings with their cans of beer. On entering the room and suite the smell was the obvious difficulty. Strong yet un-identifiable chemical and organic agents permeated all. The suite was 2 adjoining rooms knocked together with the door between removed. The 'living' room was furnished with a sofa, tv and hot tub. The previous en-suite bathroom remained. Many lights did not work, the carpet looked foul, electrics were threadbare, old and seemed dangerous. Bed seemed clean and was comfortable. The other two in my group found a greater stink and large patches of unidentifiable liquids on the carpet. River turned out to be a drainage ditch. We strongly considered all staying in the one room and barricading the doors. The night passed quietly - no external noise but the sense of being in somewhere dingy, unwholesome and potentially dangerous never left. Breakfast was basic but better than expected.
