I stayed at this hotel in conjunction with work in November 2005. This facility was not my first choice but my usual DC area haunts were full up, and I was able to snag a really good AAA rate – so stay here I did.
The Springfield Hampton Inn is located in a busy, upscale commercial area near the confluence of three major highways. Upon check-in, I was assigned a room on the fifth floor of this seven-story hotel. When I got to my room, both the high-speed internet and telephone were not fully operational, however, a call to the front desk brought quick resolution. The in-room internet is not wireless, and there should be a Cat 5 patch cord at the work desk to connect to your laptop. If not, call the front desk and they will provide one. Once hooked up, though, you will be pleased with the speed. Wireless internet access is available in the lobby.
The room seemed small to me, however, it was clean and quiet. As is the case with about half the Hamptons I have stayed in, the work desk is adjacent to the air conditioner, so prepare to be blown upon while you are working. In addition to standard amenities such as a hair dryer and coffee maker, the room came equipped with a refrigerator and microwave. The bed was comfortable and the large-screen TV offered an impressively large array of viewing options.
The Hampton and adjacent Comfort Inn have an agreement allowing Hampton guests to participate in Comfort Inn’s happy hour starting at 5:30 p.m. weekdays. Similarly, Hampton guests can use Comfort’s 3rd-floor self-service laundry facilities since there are none at the Hampton. $1.50 to wash and the same to dry.
Day Two of my stay presented more problems. The high-speed internet was working but now the telephone at the work desk, a two-line model, somehow got its lines crossed. When I dialed a number on one of the two lines, it also went through on the other one, rendering the phone unusable. Repairs to the phone line had to wait until Day Three. The other phone in the room worked fine but it was hard to do work while sitting on the bed. Also, a document delivery that was sent to me in care of the hotel via overnight service got delivered at 9:30 a.m. – and sat at the front desk all day. When I called the front desk that evening to ask if it had been delivered, they said, no, it hadn’t, and that they would call me when it was. I called the sender to confirm that she had indeed sent the document. She had, and emailed me the tracking information that showed the document had been delivered. When I printed that out and presented it to the front desk, the attendant quickly found the package! I needed that document at the time it was delivered, and complained to the manager about it. I left a note at the front desk for the manager to call me during the day, but he never got it.
The humongous Springfield Mall is approx. a half-mile distant. You can walk there but be prepared for 15 minutes or so on the hoof. The Hilton Hotel is across Loisdale Court from the Hampton. There is a Houlihan’s at the Hilton, making it the closest full-service restaurant within walking distance.
I would only stay here again if I found myself in the same situation, i.e., I was not able to get in to one of my “regular” hotels. The many small problems I encountered while a guest at this Hampton, and the front desk’s lack of response, soured me on the experience.
