Signs all over the hotel extol the ideal of getting a score of 10 out of 10 and although this Hilton is nice in many respects, given our one night stay, a score of 10 is out of the question.
The pluses:
Central location: The Hilton is within a mild walk to the huge Springfield Mall and right on top of the exit for Springfield/I-95 area. However, if you are a first timer here or haven’t been back in awhile, know your exit names AND numbers, directions and maps VERY well – BEFORE you get in the area. The nick name of this region of 95 and 495 isn’t the “Spaghetti Bowl” for nothing, it is well deserved, plus it’s undergoing a massive redesign / rebuild and even when it’s all done - will be still be a confusing mess of signs, ramps and near instance comments to one direction or another.
Back to the hotel: The pool is, although shallow, large and very well heated, so much so that the absent of a Jacuzzi is not missed. The fitness center is on the other side of the building and two floors up from the pool, but the equipment is upscale, several different types, weights, TV and all new.
There is a chain restaurant and bar attached with it’s own entrance to the hotel, making it very convenient, and mall has another large selection restaurants so dining / shopping won’t be an issue.
Check into the staying on upper two floors of this 12 story location, the bonuses at this level may be worth considering. The three elevators are fast and timely, no long waits.
The rooms are a mixed bag of pluses and minuses, but over all nice. The bed, the major item in any hotel, was a pillow top and comfortable, but a bit firm for my taste. The bath has a small outside sink/mirror and a large sink counter, with coffee maker/dryer in a bag on the well lit bath side. Ice machines are on all floors. A/C worked well, but a bit noisy.
Neutral item: Rooms [about] 16 through 20 on all floors are near the elevators.
The negatives:
Given this property is a Hilton, and is supposed to be in a higher tier of hotel class [along with the price], but it gives the impression of an old rehabbed structure which still needs some sprucing up. The building rooms have a north south orientation and no other structures nearby, but with all the dark carpeting the hallway seem almost foreboding. The elevator to get to the pool [which is also the freight/service elevator] was busted and on the other side to the building from the main elevators. This means when that elevator is out you will have use the darkish three level fire escape stairs from the second floor to get to the pool, as there is no real outside entrance, but there is doorway to small patio, however, the gate in the high fence is an interior bolted service entrance.
The room we stayed in was long, but felt narrow - giving it, even with the south face wall to wall windows, a tight feeling. The dark carpeting had a few stains, but nothing major. The seams of the wall paper in several areas were separating, showing small gaps. Most of the dark furniture was in need of a touch up. A floor lamp was not working; switch knob missing, socket ajar and no wall switch. The bath had cracked floor and base tiles and the shower head was a small and limited in adjustment, placed on a high swan neck, making it hard for a shorter persons to adjust. The counter top front panel had a large section missing, exposing a retrofit repair. Finally the door frame, by the tub, was a rusting, paint pealing eyesore.
The staff, so so at best. They all gave the impression they wanted to be somewhere else and were not pleased being stuck on the weekend shift and generally not very upbeat.
There is more, but that - and the other reviews will give a good picture of the property. Most of the problems, although not major, are easily repairable, but given they seemed to have been around awhile - and I think they will be around awhile longer, before they are finally taken care of.
Bottom line: It’s a Hilton, but given the vast number of hotels in this and near by areas - look around before committing to this place, and try to find a discount somewhere, it isn’t worth the rack rate. Sorry Springfield Hilton, but I have to give you a 5 out 10, after all, you are a Hilton.
