The hotel was nice, the restaurants excellent, but not much else to do. An exellent choice if you are just looking to do nothing but relax, but otherwise you will be bored. The beach was nice but hard to get to, and once there the flies were so bad you couldn't lay in the sun and the bay was full of jellyfish (locals call them Sea Nettles). Cathy picked us up promptly at the pier when we arrived, and cooked an excellent hearty breakfast each morning. Unfortunately, although she was pleasant, she could have been a little more informative. Information that she should have volunteered: Golf cart rentals are available at the Sunset Inn. Cost is approx $125 for the weekend but they are a lifesaver! Golf carts are your main mode of transportation as well as being your entertainment. Checkout time is several hours before the Ferry to Chrisfield, MD. There is a bathroom on the first floor of the main building that is stocked with towels, soaps, shampoo, etc so that you can go to the beach and clean up before you catch the ferry. If you are looking for a quiet weekend, this is the place. Otherwise, don't bother. As a side note: Tangier is a "dry" island, so there is no liquor sold or served. You are allowed to bring your own. Once again I'd like to stress that there is a big problem with biting black flies on the island. I would assume that this is because so much of the island is marsh. We brought several different types of insect repellant, but none seemed to work very well. We met another couple at the hotel who stated that they thought the insect repellant only drew the flies more. I do not know if the flies are such a big problem all year round, but it really limits your outdoor time.

We had the best weekend on Tangier Island at Shirley's Bay View Inn. Kathy met us at the dock in a golf cart and was extremely friendly and helpful during our stay. It is true, there is nothing to do...except watching beautiful sunsets, walking on the beach and getting to know some islanders. Even our 11 year old had a great time!
We had a room in the inn, not one of the cottages, which were all booked. The room was spacious and large enough for the three of us with a small fridge and a balcony with a great view of the bay. We were there in the "off" season so the few shops and restaurants weren't open with the exception of Lorraine's good sandwichs and pizza.
Breakfast was included at the bay view inn, it was good and plentiful and they didn't mind that we are late risers.
Only bad thing about the weekend was having to leave! We're looking forward to our next trip and we'd definitely stay at the bay view inn again!

I returned from three days on Tangier enlightened and totally relaxed! Tangier was not at all like I expected...the wildlife was amazing, the beach was all mine (awesome sunsets!) and the seafood was the best I've ever had (and I've been all over the world). The islanders had these great, interesting accents and were really friendly. I cannot wait to go back with friends to experience Tangier, which is really unique!

Please don't miss Tangier Island, VA. Takes you back in time to the good old days. Great town, Friendly people and the best seafood I have tasted anywhere. We stayed at Shirley's Bayview Inn B&B. Beautiful place and they served a bigggggg breakfast, which was included in the price of the cottage. Give it a try. We know we are going back.

We stayed at Shirlley's Bed and Breakfast on Tangier Island, VA. in early June, 2003. We found the cabins at Shirley's to be very quaint. The cabins and the grounds were very well maintained. The owners were also very friendly and down to earth. The breakfast was very good. The island itself was a fun and interesting experience. The seafood is some of the freshest you'll ever have. I recommennd this as a good weekend trip.
