My family of 4 stayed at the Surfside Inn from August 11-15. The hotel could not offer us the deal that their website offered at $149 per night. We stayed in room #206 on second floor. We requested a non-smoking room that was recently refurbished. We were told the only thing refurbished was the bathrooms. Our first impression of the hotel was when we drove our car to the second floor to unload and smelled the garbage yard that was in the corner of the second floor parking garage. The smell was overwhelming. On entrance to the second floor hallway, the carpets were stained, unclean, and not very welcoming. We got to our room and hand to lean against the metal door to open it. The room did have an odor and was warm. The old air ventilators did NOT have any adjustments only a switch on the wall that operated the blower on low, medium, high, or off. Turning the switch on high, the room became more comfortable. The bed sheets appeared to be in good condition and the 3 pillows on each bed were fine. The bathtub had a granite-like surround. The vent in the bathroom was filthy and did not work effectively. Our dinner the first night was at the hotel's restaurant FishBones. We chewed our way through the dinner and were glad to leave. Saw another couple refuse to pay for their dinner because of problems. Police were called and they were taken away. Breakfast the next morning at 8:30 AM was rather slim with bagels, cereal, apples, mini doughnuts, mini muffins, juice, coffee, milk. There were 5 tables in the breakfast room and after asking where we were suppose to sit, the attendant said she would ask at the front desk. They gave her permission to open up a side room. We enjoyed looking at the beautiful fish outside the lobby but advise not to use the stairs to the room which takes you through the smelly garbage dump in the garage. Our third day was cold and lacked sunlight. We could not turn heat on in the room and when you shut the blower switch off, we heard all the noise in the hallways. We headed up to the heated indoor pool mid-day. The doors were locked on a day when children wanted to take advantage of a warm indoor pool. We were told they were clorinating the pool (in the middle of the day?). That day 2 bus loads of teen campers moved in and took over 3 floors hanging off the balconies and throwing booklets, flip flops, towels to the ground and on the restaurant awnings. Luckily they were not on our floor. The next day we returned to the pool and a sign said closed for service. Maid service was sad. They would knock at the door and ask if you wanted service. The only service they gave us all week was fresh towels. The floor was not cleaned once. We were all very thankful when the week was over and we were heading home. This hotel is not a hotel that should be in the top 10. I didnot find anyone with southern hospitality and actually cannot remember anyone that said good morning or hello. Needless to say, we will never return to this dirty, smelling place again.
