I just made my first trip to Virginia Beach, Virginia. I live in the panhandle of West Virginia. The trip to the beach was very easy to navigate. The trip home was ok but ran into rush hour in Norfolk, VA. I was pleasantly surprised by how family friendly the whole area was. I traveled with my neighbor and her two young children as well as my young children, Ages 1, 5, 5, and 11. The kids had a great time on the beach and the boardwalk. We took our bikes from home because they have a bike path that runs along the boardwalk, so you can ride all day. Very easy. It runs from the inlet to I think 41st street. The beach is near the Naval Base so you have Jets and helicopters flying all day but the kids enjoyed watching. The noise level was very pleasant and the beach was VERY clean. Boardwalk was busy but manageable. They have play places along the boardwalk in the sand for the kids to play. Every few streets they have live bands playing in the evening but they all stop around 10. Our hotel was right on the boardwalk and we didn't hear any loud, disruptive sounds. Plenty of restaurants to choose from and very close to all hotels. Make sure when you go you get a SunnyDays travel book or visitors guide. They have plenty of coupons for everything. The people were very friendly. Bike rentals are all along the bike path. I will be back for another trip. Best beach I've been to yet. I recommend Planet Pizza for families with kids. The prices are good and the service is fast.
