“The Virginia Beach Area Perfect for Families”

Virginia Beach

I just made my first trip to Virginia Beach, Virginia. I live in the panhandle of West Virginia. The trip to the beach was very easy to navigate. The trip home was ok but ran into rush hour in Norfolk, VA. I was pleasantly surprised by how family friendly the whole area was. I traveled with my neighbor and her two young children as well as my young children, Ages 1, 5, 5, and 11. The kids had a great time on the beach and the boardwalk. We took our bikes from home because they have a bike path that runs along the boardwalk, so you can ride all day. Very easy. It runs from the inlet to I think 41st street. The beach is near the Naval Base so you have Jets and helicopters flying all day but the kids enjoyed watching. The noise level was very pleasant and the beach was VERY clean. Boardwalk was busy but manageable. They have play places along the boardwalk in the sand for the kids to play. Every few streets they have live bands playing in the evening but they all stop around 10. Our hotel was right on the boardwalk and we didn't hear any loud, disruptive sounds. Plenty of restaurants to choose from and very close to all hotels. Make sure when you go you get a SunnyDays travel book or visitors guide. They have plenty of coupons for everything. The people were very friendly. Bike rentals are all along the bike path. I will be back for another trip. Best beach I've been to yet. I recommend Planet Pizza for families with kids. The prices are good and the service is fast.

“Chick's Beach Rentals”

Virginia Beach

Jul 3, 2008

The WORST vacation rental I have ever had, and I've had plenty.
This is a dump, a duplex across the street from a dirty beach.
You can hear everything from the unit next door. The owner
claimed there was internet access at the unit but when we got there it didn't work, and they wouldn't fix it. When we got there there was a list of things that we were responsible for. They wanted us to take out these enormous garbage bins to the street during the week for pick up. The bins were crammed full and when I complained to the owner and said I did not feel it was my responsibility to take out the garbage of what was obviously many previous tenants, she told me it wasn't her garbage either. I replied it was her house and she was responsible for the upkeep, not me. Although the linens are advertised as being "provided" you are expected to strip the beds and do the sheets before you leave. Because of these two things, she refused to refund $50 of my security deposit. I guess she didn't realize that internet access is $10/day at most places and she therefore owed me money. The screened in porch was next to the overflowing garbage area, as was the yard, and the place was full of flies. This place was so bad we actually left before our week was up. We couldn't wait to get out of there.

“Nice Beach, Funky Town”

Virginia Beach

Jun 3, 2008

Lot's to like. Good, sandy beach. Middle class town and tourists. A raw bar every block. Plenty of really good restaurants. No uppity airs.

Didn't like: Gets a little seedy later at night, alcoholism and such. We were there in May. It must be a zoo in summer. Military jets in constant exercizes over head were much too loud. I wouldn't go back because of that.

After spending a weekend in Virginia Beach, I can honestly say I am truly embarassed that this town is in the United States. We should be ashamed of ourselves for letting a place like this exist. They call this a beach town? No. You want a beach town go down the shore to Jersey or keep driving to Myrtle Beach, SC. This place is a laughable joke. If you live above the Mason Dixon line, this place is absolutely not for you. The moment you enter the city you feel surrounded by people who wish the US was still divided and would rather go to a monster truck ralley then take a shower (Im saying this because there was indeed a monster truck rally there all weekend...classy, I know). The place is filthy. The police are either A. rent-a-cops B. mall security guards C. just guys who like the village people or D. all of the above. They have no idea what is going on and should just quit. Overall this place is a hell-hole. The restaurants are horrible too. I only saw two nightclubs, peppermint (which was geared towards the, um, "hip-hop" crowd) and Peabodys (which is the worst place in the entire world). Don't even get me started on Peabodys. I won't say anything other then just don't go here. It tries to be a good night club. But, well, it isn't. I guarantee that if you go here you will be so angry at yourself. In conclusion, don't go to VA beach and especially don't go to Peabodys.

“Very over rated & not for families”

My husband & I just returned from living in Virginia Beach for 3 months. We had jobs in Norfolk. We camped at the Holiday TRAV-L- Park on General Booth which was awful. Virginia Beach promotes itself as a big vacation area. It is if you want to vacation in Baghdad. There are military jets from Oceana Naval Air station flying low at all hours of the day and night. The Naval Air Station and all the military basis in the area are a big part of the enonomy and they were there first. However, Virginia Beach cannot have their proverbial cake and eat it too. We were visiting during the winter so most everything were closed down. However, come April 1 prices soared. The beach was empty, the shops empty, the hotels empty, the campground empty, the weather cold and raining but the price gouging started. Still the oceana flights buzzed over head, so loud you had to stop conversation, put the TV on subtitles, & cover your ears. There is also a safety concern. We were frequently stopped by bums looking for a hand out and there are "no cussing" signs every where. The boardwalk is a nice place to run but not when you have to pay 6 dollars to park & the parking lot is empty. This is a cheap run down ruined beach front. Not a fun place to take a family.
