With a trip to Colonial Williamsburg, July 28, 2005 planned I considered my options for hotels. The "on-site" Colonial Williamsburg hotels (WB Inn, WB Lodge, etc.) offer a $29 length of stay ticket (for the arrival day thru your depature date) and FREE kids tickets. On a side note, one of the CW phone staff was quite helpful in letting me know that this special rate was better than booking a complete package with other WB attractions.
I was a bit hestitant to book the only moderate on-site hotel available, Williamsburg Lodge, after being warned by the Colonial Williamsburg phone staff of the construction. They assured me that the construction would not interfere with my stay, but who hasn't heard that line before.
I decided to book our room in the brand new East Wing of the Lodge figuring it would be better than the Tazwell Wing that had been "renovated." Not knowing what the renovated rooms look like, I can tell you the East Wing rooms are lovely. Our room contained two queen poster beds, a small dresser, desk, leather covered wing back chair, wooden rocker, small game table, and amoire which had small safe, refriderator, and TV. Sound like a lot for one room...? Maybe just a bit, but it was decorated lovely and totally in the historic theme.
The bathroom was equally as nice, large with more ammenities than you'd find at other hotels in this price range including plush white robes, a large towel hamper, full sized in-room coffee maker (no mini four cup maker!) and more.
The room also has a door that goes to a small patio outside with another set of wooden rockers and small table into a pretty landscaped area.
The construction was obvious, but unless you plan to hang out directly outside your room during the day when they are working it will not interrupt your stay in the least.
The only other inconvienances were that the front desk is actually across the street in another building and the continental breakfast provided is located in the Tazwell wing. The front desk issue only came in to play when we couldn't find our way to room (though we were so close to it, it would've bit us). We had checked in earlier in the day and given very good directions, that I had forgotten, to the room. We called the front desk for directions and they had a bit of a time understanding where we were and where our room was. Had we been in the same building I am sure they would've sent someone right over to help us. The continental breakfast is located in the Tazwell wing and meant a bit of a hike over there from the East Wing. There is no seating for breakfast as it is grab-and-go so if you forget something it would be another hike back. It was well stocked though with better than some continental fare including individually cello-wrapped pastries, several types of juices and Dole fruit bowls among other things.
We didn't use the outdoor pool area, which was also across the street which I believe is part of the WB Inn.
There was ample underground parking and the hotel is just a short block to the just about the middle of the CW area, though there is a bus shuttle stop just outside the hotel.
Take advantage of the low construction rates on this hotel, I'm sure they will go up once the construction is complete.
