36 years ago, my husband & I stayed at the Williamsburg Lodge for our honeymoon. We fell in love with Williamsburg then & have been coming back every few years since then. When our children were small, we stayed at the Woodlands and a couple of years ago we stayed in one of the Colonial Houses (a very nice experience!). Although we knew that the Williamsburg Lodge was under construction, we decided to stay at the Lodge for our vacation. We stayed in one of the Tazewell Hall rooms (see photos). The room was very clean and comfortable, there was a balcony with a couple of chairs. The facility is also very secure, access to the building and elevator is by room key only. We found the personnel at the Lodge to be extremely accommodating and helpful! We arrived by train and were concerned about arriving late for our dinner reservations. The front desk staff immediately offered to call the restaurant and arranged for transportation to the restaurant. The Lodge is within walking distance to the historic area and could not be more conveniently located. We explored two of the James River plantations, Berkeley and Shirley. Both are worth the trip and very interesting. Colonial Williamsburg has something for everyone, such as, Revolutionary City (interactive re-creations of events that occured around the time of the Revolutionary War), carriage rides, a variety of walking tours, and examples of plays that would have been popular in the 18th century. Conversations with George Washington and Peyton Randolph were fascinating. The actors protrayed their characters with authenticity and had no difficulty in answering questions from the audience. Their wealth of knowledge was very impressive! Evening entertainment is available -- we enjoyed a harpischord concert and a witch trial at the Capitol building.
Dining options are numerous--our favorites include, the Kings Arms Tavern, Williamsburg Inn, Berett's Seafood, Fat Canary, and Christiana Campbells Tavern. Shield's Coffeehouse was perfect for a quick breakfast.
Williamsburg is always improving and we are already talking about coming back next year when all of the construction is completed.
