“Pleasant staff, clean enough, convenient enough”

Travelodge Williamsburg

4 of 5 stars
Center Harbor, NH
Jun 30, 2007

My standard of comparison for budget motels is tent camping, so most llive up to that standard (for one that didn''t, check out the Hernando, Florida, Value Inn, the worst place in the world east of Juarez). With that in mind, I rate this motel as good enough for the price. It's not the Ritz Carlton, but neither is it a roach motel. The manager and staff are exceptionally pleasant, the rooms are large enough and clean and the grounds are well maintained and kept clean. While we were staying there another guest spilled something oily on the parking lot and the owner and a helper were out cleaning it almost immediately. Also, our air conditioner didn't work when we checked in and it was replaced within half an hour. Sort of a glass half full situation. Perhaps the A/C should have been working when we checked in, but I was perfectly happy to have it fixed as quickly as it was. The breakfast was the standard cold breakfast, good enough bur nothing to write home about.. In brief, if you get a room here for a good ratee abd you're value conscious, book it. If you want fancy and aren't concerned about price, head for someplace nicer and more expensive..

Location at 2225 Richmond Road is across from Olive Garden and close to all things Williamsburg. Great price ($36) and clean, comfortable accomodations. Breakfast included and cheerful help from front desk. Would recommend highly for great value and convenience.

“Getting What You Pay For”

This very basic Travelodge apparently was the Captain John Smith Inn until recently. Williamsburg also has a Travelodge Inn and Suites, which from the outside looked quite nicer than this one.

Pros:
- Cheap
- Clean
- Microwave and mini-fridge (!)
- Short drive to Colonial Williamsburg
- Proximity to decent restaurants and stores
- Friendly staff
- Seemed safe enough (to my surprise)

Cons:
- Cheap, small, uncomfortable beds. The mattresses were not at all firm, making it difficult to sleep. Normal double beds are fine, but these double beds were shorter than normal. My wife is 5'3" and her feet reached past the end of the bed! Imagine me at a very average 5'10".
- Not enough towels. When we arrived, there were four towels, hand towels, etc. Every other day, when they could obviously see that we were there with our three children, they only gave us three towels. And the towels are threadbare.
- Free breakfast. Get there when they open or sooner or you might miss out! Oh, and don't count on having a seat in the very small room. However, while the food lasted, it was decent for a free breakfast.
- Train tracks out back. If you have kids who are wanderers, beware! It's a 20-second stroll to the tracks, which also makes it noisy five or six times each night as freight trains pass.

I was puzzled that instead of accepting the tip money I put on the pillow (the internationally customary hotel tipping place as far as I know), they put my money on the nightstand. Maybe it was an apology for not having enough towels. :-) So I didn't bother tipping again until the final morning, when I left a more generous tip (and who knows what they did with it).

We didn't spend a lot of time in the motel, so the negatives didn't ruin our Williamsburg trip by any means. And we were safe and left healthy and clean, so we got pretty much what we paid for. And maybe I've just been spoiled by business travel. But this would have to be one of the two or three lowest quality hotels/motels I have used. It will do as long as you're not expecting much. As I said, it's clean and safe, and that's about it.

“Not as bad as I thought”

My friend and I stayed here when visiting a friend in Williamsburg for the weekend, because it was the cheapest place we could find online and we're young. We read through the reviews on here, and we were worried that we should have spent a little extra on somewhere nicer. We realized we'd only be sleeping there and taking showers, we'd make the best of it. When we got there, we were surprised it wasn't as bad as we expected. There were a few things that got to us, though....
The walls are paperthin, we woke up at 8 am to a mother screaming in the room next to us, but that's probably something that we could get in any hotel. The train was extremely loud, and we had one of the front rooms. It took a while for the hot water to come on, also. And, it was difficult trying to speak with the foreigners that take care of it in the summer.
But, it does have a microfridge and a TV with more than two or three channels. We also didn't have any problems with the sheets being dirty or bugs (one thing we were both worried about since we have harsh reactions to bug bites).
I'd say if you're looking for a cheap place that you're not planning on spending the whole day in, it's not that bad. Not what I'm used to, but it was alright for the weekend.

“Paid money to Leave”

Travelodge Williamsburg

Had booked to stay there for 5 nights through Expedia with my fiance and my parents.

Left after the most depressing 30 minutes in our lives.

There was a young female chambermaid who ended up in tears because the reason we were leaving was the condition of the place. She'd just started, and no doubt was in fear of losing her job. It wasn't her fault... the filth and grime had obviously built up over many years of neglect.

Found somewhere that cost a little more but was a million times better.

Felt sorry for the chambermaid, but hopefully like most sensible people she won't have been there for long.

PS: I can only imagine anyone who posted a positive review of this place had either arrived directly from a Siberian detention camp.... or owned the place.
