“Wonderfu and unique lunch in Williamsburg!”

Old Chickahominy House

My husband and I had a wonderful lunch at the Old Chickahominy House on July 20, 2008. I had read the reviews here before we went and almost did not eat here because of some of the reviews that we read. We just had to write our own review because our experience there was so wonderful!

The restaurant was very busy when we arrived, but we were very graciously greeted and we put our names on the list. We were told that our wait could be as long as 40 minutes to an hour - but this was no problem because we really enjoyed shopping in their gift shop while we waited (we were delighted to find many treasures which they said that they could hold and we could pay for them when we paid for our meals). We waited for approximately 45 minutes when our name was finally called. We loved the atmosphere - it is like an old plantation or tavern - and this restaurant is not like eating "chain" food - it is good down-home southern Virginia regional cooking. If you are looking for area flavor while you are on vacation and something out of the ordinary - then this is the place for you!!! Both of us got the Miss Melinda's Special which is a cup of brunswick stew (nether of us had brunswick stew before - but both of us LOVED it - and we could also have gotten a bowl instead of a cup for an additional charge), old virginia ham on hot biscuits (the ham was wonderful and tasty and the biscuits were stretched out long - like bread and just WONDERFUL - melt in your mouth - we have never had anything else like them - they come plain - but condiments are given on request), fruit salad (the fruit has a special dressing that we think was possibly sour cream & cream cheese mixed together), homemade pie (we chose blackberry and it was just FANTASTIC), and coffee or tea (we had the iced tea and it was WONDERFUL). It is not a huge lunch - but certainly filled up both of us.

Both of us keep commenting to each other what a special and different lunch we had at the Old Chickahominy House and that we will certainly return there again the next time that we are in Williamsburg.

“Local Tells it Like It Really Is”

We had lunch at this restaurant Fridaty -7/25/08. We chose that restaurant due to TA reviewer's. I live in VA Beach and my friend lives in Richmond so we're basically locals - Please don't go to this restaurant. The menu is very limited. Most people order one of their two specials due to the price. They amount to two "bisquits" with Va Country Ham, fruit Salad, pie and coffee/tea ($6.95) or Melinda's Special that is $2 more which is what I ordered because I was hungry. My special included a 1/3 cup of homemade brunswick stew. (There was chicken & dumplings and two other entrees but it was obvious that the specials were their specialty. The second specal was only $695 but didn't include the stew.

OK, the ham was great and I will say that the brunswick stew was pretty good, however, you needed all the liquid yuo could get once you ate the "bisquits". First, let me tell you about the fruit salad - the fruit salad consisted of 1/2 very small canned peach, 1/2 piece of a canned pineapple ring and a piece of lettuce that was good for only one bite. This was barely drizzled with a watered down mayonaise dressing.

The "bisquit's" consisted of an @ 4x6" flat cracker-like bisquit (1/4" thick) that was so dry we both drank two 20 oz glasses of tea/water. Like I said the ham was great - no cooking needed, just slicing. They didn't even serve any butter, majo or mustard with the bisquits unless you asked for it. What a mistake.

Now of the best part! I absolutely love chocolate pie so of course that's what I ordered. My friend ordered the "homemade" blackberry pie. Let me say that I even like chocolate pies made with sugar-free pudding so I'm not picky. This pie was almost inedible. It had a strange almost fake plastic consistency and an even stranger taste. I almost always will either finish my desert or take the remainder with me but this time I couldn't even finish the miniscule pie. My friend couldn't finish hers either. She said it tasted exactly like a canned pie filling.

Virginia has some fine products - ham, peanuts apples, corn etc. If you don't heed this review, please don't compare this restaurant with other Virginia food. A man that works in the local Ukrops (upscale grocry store) there told us that he would have recommended Food for Thought.

If you're ever in the Virginia Beach/Norfolk area, check out Lynnhaven Seafood House, Bella Italia, Aldo's, Il Gardenia and the Coastal Grill. I haven't looked to see if TA's list includes these restaurants for this area, but I know we've eater at each of those restaurants numerous times. Virginia is for Lovers

With all the really great restaurants in Williamsburg, skip this one. The "fruit salad" was a slice of canned pineapple with mayo on a lettuce leaf. The biscuts - more like flat bread - were dry. The chocolate pie had a taste I can't even identify.

“Best ham biscuits ever!”

Chickamominy House has always been a favorite place especially to bring out of town guests. Their ham biscuits are all that and more. The staff is older and somewhat set in their ways. Think Seinfields "Soup Nazi" but the food is well worth it.
