“Not bad for the $”

Stayed here last month (2/05) for one night. It's one of the only coconut coast hotels. I just took the non-ocean view room for $89/night, and it was fine. The grounds are beautiful & directly on the sea. It had AC, something most top Kauai resorts don't even have, which mostly drowned out the street noise. I found the place rather quaint - like pre-tourism quaint (there's not much of this left on Kauai).

OK - so the bed was a bit soft and the room small, but you're in paradise - get out of room and into the ocean! You get what you pay for: as my dad would say, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

If you've never been to Kauai (especially you honeymooners), you won't be happy staying here. I stayed here as Lonely Planet guide recommended it. We simply needed to stay somewhere for one night before checking into our timeshare in Princeville. There are several places to eat just south down the street.

“Don't Go here!”

This hotel was terrible. The phone didn't work, the ceiling tiles were missing, bugs in the room, dirty carpet, moldy shower stall, refrigerator didn't work, and rude desk staff. The only good thing about it is the location on the beach. The carpet was filthy and the room smelling like mold. They said it was just remodeled?? We tried to get another room with a phone that worked and none were made up yet! (this was at 8:00 pm). Were told to use the pay phone (in the pouring rain!). We were constantly given misinformation by the desk clerk on everything from the phone hook-up to refunds for unused reservations! All this for $134 a night. It was a big rip off. We left as soon as we good get reservations elsewhere.

“extremely disappointed”

I have never been more disappointed with a hotel before! When my wife and I arrived, we were greeted to trash scattered all over the hotel grounds. They were doing some remodeling and threw all the trash and old carpet right out on the parking lot, hallways and even the lawn! The hotel must have gone through a rate hike as well as they charged us $125 for oceanfront views. Totally not worth the price. Ourly "newly remodeled" room looked as though it was a high school wood shop project. The hotel is very small and the beach is the size of a large backyard. Oh yeah, and that nearby public pool, I probably wouldn't let my dog swim in it plus it's only open from 1 to 4 in the afternoon!!! We had booked our entire two week vacation there but only ended staying there one night! When we tried to check in, our room wasn't ready but that gave us the opportunity to go down the street to the Aloha Beach Resort. For only five bucks more per night, the hotel had two pools, one for kids, a snack/cocktail bar, a nice restaraunt, Concierge service which was very helpful and the resort was beautifully landscaped. The Hotel Coral Reef is ridiculously overpriced and I would never recommend even my worst enemies to stay there. This place makes the Motel 6 look like the Ritz Carlton.

“No Snobs, Relaxation and Seclusion on the Beach”

We stayed last week of March 2004 and how quiet and peaceful. Beach right next to the hotel with nobody else on it. All rooms being freshly painted and AC added. We never used our ac but left the windows open and fell asleep and awoke to the sounds of the ocean. This is not a 4 or 5 star hotel but it is a place to sleep and shown right on the beach and I mean right on the beach. If you want resort swank don't come here. It is a simple home town hotel with no frills but have I mentioned it was right on the beach and nobody else was on it. Except a few hermit crabs. Plus you could snorkle and the fish didn't attack wanting to be fed. If you are a snob please don't come because you will be greatly disappointed. If you are simple folks who don't expect luxery at $89 a night you will love it. Did I mention it is right on the beach?

“A Place to Sleep”

Convenient location on beach and within walking distance to Kapa'a restaurants. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful. The lower priced rooms had no ocean view...in spite of what the brochure says but do have nearly constant highway noise. Rooms are dingy but clean, pool is in a public park a block away. Coolers and beach mats are available free on loan. New management is coming and renovations are in progress.
