We were with a group, which had negotiated a rate of $180/night, with no resort fee (normally $24). In that context, at that rate, the experience was very positive overall.
The resort is divided into two parts on two sides of a road that is a dead end (so quiet). The oceanside part has rooms that face ... the ocean. On the other side of the street are several buildings which are, apparently, the "garden view" rooms. We stayed there.
Several reviews have suggested that garden view rooms are tiny. From a European perspective, they are generous. From a US perspective, they seem quite nice and typical of a US hotel. We were in building 7 and managed to get a room in the 4th (top) floor. These rooms have vaulted ceilings and a larger balcony than those on lower floors. Worth trying for.
The cost of food and drinks at the resort is inflated, but each room has an ample refrigerator. Leaving the airport, we stopped at the Costco, which is right on the way, and purchased plenty of water, soft drinks, beer, etc. This turned out to be a good move. We saved plenty this way.
The beach and pool area are exquisite. We did a lot of snorkeling right off the beach and at a point 1/2 mile down the road. All things considered, excellent. Caution though. There are no lifeguards at the beach and there is shorebreak. While we were there, a 30 year old man from Colorado broke his neck in the shorebreak and became a quadriplegic, according to the newspaper. It's not terribly hazardous, but caution is required.
The restaurant has a beautiful view. Breakfast though, was $20 for a buffet and that was basically it. You could order a la carte, but it would end up costing $20 regardless. The view is staggeringly beautiful, but the buffet is steam table.
Across the street from the hotel (through a neighboring resort) is a Roy's Restaurant. The food there is wonderful and the service stellar. It's considered the best on the island and this is maybe a 10 minute walk. There is also a restaurant beside it, Keoki's Paradise, which is very nice. In the same small complex, there is a Starbucks and general store. Point being, don't bother eating at the Sheraton. Talk a walk.
People at the resort were very nice. The Sheraton management though, is prone to ripping you off. For example, I received two packages and was charged $5 each for receiving a package! That's a first for me at any hotel in the world.
If you enjoy running, you can run on the street from the hotel and find the running very nice.
Overall, the garden rooms are a bit run down, but OK. This is a wonderful location, so you are paying for that, rather than luxury, per se. But I would return. The setting, even considering it is a big resort, is idyllic.
