We stayed at the Hotel Hana Maui for two nights and I have nothing but great things to say about it. We loved our sea ranch cottage (#301). The views from the deck were as good as it gets. In fact, we loved it so much that we dragged our bed out onto the deck to sleep. We were a little worried about the food service (after reading the reviews), but we have nothing but good things to say since staying there. I will say that breakfast service was a little slow, but we got there at 7:30 am and we were able to get out by 8:30. We decided against eating in the dining room, as the bar had music and was a much more relaxed setting. The pool and jacuzzi were awesome as we basically had them to ourselves. This place is definitely worth a "splurge" and we will be going back for sure. An added treat was that they have a small 3 hole golf course here that we played (it wasn't maintained like a Kapalua), but we walked around with our "cold ones" and had a great time (the views are incredible).

Our Sea Ranch cottage at the edge of the sea was at the property's far end so we appreciated the golf cart transport from the bell desk to the main lodge, esp after dark at mealtime. These are 1950s style cottages, with sliding glass doors and screens bilt before the ones we use now were invented. Our curtains had fist size holes in the linings, which only showed at night with the lights on.

Every night I left the door open so the surf , 50 ft away, could lull me to sleep. We draped our welcome leis over the headboard so the scent would fill our dreams and dispel any thoughts of tsunami. We had only a shower, not the soaking tub we spotted on some balconies which might annoy some, since this is a top priced place. Since the staff all comes from 350 person town (3 plus hours too far to commute) when someone calls in sick (0r perhaps when surf is up) theres a big impact on service. Our first morning we waited 45 minutes to be seated for breakfast and spent more than 2 hours to order, be served and eat. And we are both light eaters. The three-hour breakfast commitment cost us 7 pools trip & our opportunity to horseback ride. In order to prevent a repeat we went to the store (there are only 2, and they are pretty basic & pricey) to stock our fridge. Our last night I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup in the bar. It took an hour to get it and when it arrived the sandwich was grilled on only one side. When you think of how they are made, it's hard to believe this was an oversight. The cost was $15.

This still is a GREAT place but there's something wrong here. We learned that both the general manager and the food and beverage director have given notice, so that might have something to do with it..

The spa was really first rate even tho at first they had no record of one of our appointments. They fixed everything tho and the spa experience for both of us won out over the Grand Wailea's, which is first rate in an entirely different way

Hotel Hana-Maui and Honua Spa

We LOVED this hotel- as much for what it is not, as for what it is. Located 50 miles from mass-market Maui, the 60 room luxury hotel sits on perhaps 40 acres of lush, green Hawaiian real estate. It is relaxed, understated and quiet- the perfect place to chill out and rejuvenate. All rooms would be considered suites in most hotels so there is lots of room to spread out and hang out. We were told they had a new chef and we were well pleased with the food- contemporary with a Hawaiian twist. It is not densely populated; there is no golf course or kiddie-land; no one is asking you to sign a chit every ten minutes; it isn't near a mall; and it isn't well suited to people that need to be entertained 24 hours a day.

It rains on Hana's side of Maui, but during our stay it seemed to rain only at night. That said, we were told we were lucky. Also be aware that the ocean on this side of the island is rough- gorgeous to look at and perfect for accomplished swimmers, but no place for tots. The hotel has two large pools with lots and lots of loungers. One never feels crowded.

Aside from the hotel affiliated restaurant in town (which is only open for dinner two nights a week), you'll need to eat at the hotel. A la carte prices aren't cheap by San Francisco standards. However, you can choose a 3 course meal for $50 and then choose any starter, entree and dessert. It saves money and makes the meal you receive a real value.

Each unit is an open plan suite- about double the size of an average hotel room- with a large semi-private deck. It is semi-private in the sense that others can see you on your private deck. The more expensive Sea Ranch cottages are distinguished by clerestory windows that provide lots of natural light and their orientation facing the ocean, which is 100 to 1,000 yards distant. The Garden Cottages are lovely though, but darker. All cottages have a wet bar with fridge (stocked daily with soft drinks) and coffee maker. There are two rooms per building for Sea Ranch cottages, while Garden suites are in buildings of 6 or 8 suites.

90% of the guests were couples. Most everyone seemed to be content reading their books, getting sun and chatting with one another. Never once in six days did we have to deal with obnoxious noise or shrill people. There were, of course, lawn mowers and such.

Our cottage had a King sized wonder bed (great linens, duvets and I think a feather topper beneath the sheets), sofa and easy chair facing the ocean, and dining table with armchairs. The decor is 90s contemporary, done in good taste and so complete that there isn't much to complain about. Our bathroom was huge and included a jetted tub.

Hana is the tiniest of villages- a few hundred people max. The two funky general stores are it aside from the hotel shops.

If you are too lazy to walk the 200ft to 1/2 mile from your cottage to dinner or the spa, all you need to do is call for a ride on the golf cart. The staff (with lots of native Hawaiians) are helpful and accommodating.

We love being well taken care of in a calm atmosphere where other guests' agendas don't intrude on ours. Yes, we require good food too. We LOVED this hotel. We haven't found anything nearly as good in numerous trips to the Caribbean. Hotel Hana Maui is a class act, the antidote to vacations by Marriott and as far from the mass-market as you can get.

Only complaint- breakfast service was slow.

“Heavenly Hana is no joke!”

Hotel Hana-Maui and Honua Spa

Sorry for the late review, again! This hotel is incredible! We booked a bay cottage, originally, but upon arrival, they upgraded to a sea ranch cottage, which there are no words to describe it's beauty. If you want to be away from everything, without sacrificing luxury, this is the place. First, we drove the "road to Hana", which is a little difficult if you get car sick at all. We had to stop a few times so that I could get my bearings. Arriving at the hotel, we were greeted with the sweetest tuberose lei. I'll never forget that smell! Escorted to our room on a golf cart and were amazed at the size of the cottage. You won't believe it! Rustic and tropical luxury is the best description I can give. You also won't mind the baby geckos running around your room... they hide in the rafters of the ceiling, so cute (and I'm not a bug person or creepy crawly person and they did not bother me). I also saw NO spiders, so don't worry;-) The bathroom amenities are from the Honua Spa, please enjoy the soaps, as they are outstanding. You have your own private deck with chairs with a huge sliding door that almost encompasses one entire side of the cottage. Leave it open at night (with the screen closed, of course) and enjoy the soft tropical breeze and russle of the palm leaves. It's so quiet and tranquil. The pool is beautiful as well as the hot tub. Picture the hot tub with the view of horses crazing by the Pacific. Beauty beyond belief. Then imagine a beautiful volcano in the background! One thing to mention is that the sun is in and out. Best in the morning and gets cloudy in the afternoon because of the volcano. You won't mind a bit, trust me. It's all part of the package. The Honua Spa is not to be missed. The hour and half massage is amazing in your own private garden room. Afterwards, try the cold plunge, it's crazy! The lava rock hot tub at the spa is unbelievable. So many good things to say, I can't name them all! Enjoy!

“Exceptional Experience”

Hotel Hana-Maui and Honua Spa

Jan 23, 2008

Our family of 4 (two girls 10 and 13) stayed for 2 nights at the Hotel Hana Maui. We had done the road to Hana years before and knew that it would be a hard trip to do all in one day, especially with kids. Also, there is so much incredible sight seeing in Hana that it's worth taking a few days to explore all the area has to offer. We found that there was so much to do at the Hotel Hana Maui that we still found it hard to do all the sight seeing we wanted! The weather in Hana can be rainy; however, we were fairly fortunate. When we left, though, it was in a phenomenal rain storm - quite the experience to drive through with rivers gushing down the roads! My husband loved it :)

We were greeted at the Hotel Hana-Maui with fragrant leis and lovely drinks. I had just been attacked by mosquitos on a short hike and they had anti-itch cream and vinegar within minutes, without me even asking. (They had spotted the welts :) This is indicative of the service at this establishment. Everyone is so happy to help. We asked for use of a volleyball for our girls and the one at the desk was flat. Within minutes, one was delivered to our room. Complimentary drinks were put in the mini-fridge. Good coffee and a grinder in our room. The bellman, (I think his name is Ken) should be commended for his excellent service.

We had a Deluxe Sea Ranch cottage, which had a hot tub on the deck. It was such a treat! Our room was lovely. The ocean view from our room was beautiful. There are lovely spa shampoos and bath salts in an incredibly spacious bathroom. The pool was amazing - huge enough to swim laps and yet, since the hotel only has just over 60 rooms, we had it virtually to ourselves. There is no beach directly at the hotel; however, there is a beach within a few minutes where the hotel has lounges, umbrellas and complimentary beach equipment. The girls had a great time riding the waves with their boogie boards.

My husband and I both had massages that were exceptional. He had the hot stone massage and I had Thai massage. The Thai massage was the best massage I have ever had in my life. I still feel great 5 days later. I totally recommend their spa facilities. The Honua Spa is highly rated for good reason.

Dining is very limited in Hana. We had 2 breakfasts (fabulous) and one dinner at the hotel restaurant. They were good meals but a little quirky. My daughter ordered a chicken burger and got grilled chicken on rice ... but it was good and she ate it! My other daughter had a chicken caesar salad that had no chicken. Small things, really, in relation to an otherwise very positive experience. My husband says it was one of his best meals - lots of unique flavour combinations.

We did the lava cavern excursion (interesting) and the hike through the bamboo forest to an awe-inspiring waterfall. We also did the oceanside horseback riding with two lovely young guides (one was Joleen and I wish I could remember the other girl's name). They were excellent with our daughters, particularly since our older daughter had had a bad riding experience in the past and was a little nervous. It was expensive but a once in a lifetime experience.

The Hotel Hana Maui is definitely not a place you can visit on a budget; however, for 2 days we felt so spoiled! We're really glad we made Hana part of our Maui holiday.
