We stayed for 2 nights at the Hana Hotel after staying 4 nights in the more "tourist-heavy" Kaanapali. I wish we stayed longer in Hana. There is a unique feeling of being in a secret and remote area of the world when you're at this hotel. During the day we only saw a few couples (sometimes by the pool, walking the expansive grounds, at the workout facility, or the spa). During dinner there were basically 2 seatings (6-6:30 and 8-8:30) and there are about 14 couples during the heaviest times.
Spa: Expensive, but 1st class. Highly recommend the Lomi-lomi massage. 60 min was $140. Steam room, in-door and out-door showers, plunge pool and whirlpool were well maintained.
Dinner: Overall, a good experience. Most, if not all the ingredients are grown on the island and were likely hand-picked. This attention to detail does increase the cost of dinners. The $55 for a 3 course mean (appetizer, entree, and dessert) are not a bad deal for what you get.
Room: We stayed in the sea ranch cottage with hot tub with an ocean view. The feather-toped mattress was very comfortable and loved sleeping with the windows open and the ceiling fan on. Room has a fridge and was stocked with water and fruit that was including with the room price. The size of the room and the deck was large.
Outings: Recommend driving to the 7 sacred pools at haleakala state park. If your up to it, there is a 4 mile hike (round trip) through a bamboo forest to a 400 foot waterfall. Bring water and a snack in a backpack.
Certainly a 4.5 star hotel. Can't wait to be able to return.
