“DO NOT stay here”

Aston Maui Lu Resort

The pictures of this "resort" are very misleading. First of all, most of the units are not beach front and have no view of the beach. I travel about once a month or so and this is the first negative review I have felt the need to write. We were treated extremely rudely by the staff upon check in at 11:00 PM. Be careful about booking on a travel service because there were many charges we weren't told about until check in and more at check out. When we tried to talk to the manager about the charges we were told the manager would not talk to us and is too busy to be at the lobby. The outside grounds are wearing down and old. The rooms were very much sub-par. Two of the people staying in the room were bitten numerous times by bed bugs! The room had poor ventilation and the bathroom had none. There were bugs in the bathroom that was in dire need of being remodeled. When booking we were told it would be central to everything. That is only if you have a car- I would recommend looking at hotels further down kihei road for a much better location. We did not use the beach on the property one time, but rather had to rent a car to drive anytime we wanted to do something. I stayed at a resort quest property last month in waikiki and had nothing but good things to say. I was very unpleased.

As the General Manager of the Maui Lu I am upset when I hear negatives about the resort. It is an old property and we are renovating the rooms. We have a full contract with Ecolab who sprays for bugs inside and out monthly. My office is at the lobby and I have never refused to speak with a guest. It is a budget property and will remain aftert renovations are complete.

“I'd stay there again”

Okay, the Maui Lu isn't ultra modern, but it has spacious rooms, your choice of air conditioning or cross-ventilation, and a good location on the South shore, at the end of Kihei nearest the cross-island highway. The room and bath were clean, if a little rundown. The beds were excellent! Great mattresses! Amenities included a refrigerator, a coffeemaker and a safe in the room; a microwave was available in back of the reception desk, which also had coffee and tea available and a couple of computers where we printed our return boarding passes & checked email. Nice wooden walkways to the rooms, and a pleasant garden. Picnic area shaded by trees. There's a pool, although we never got around to using it, and the ocean and a sandy beach are right across the road. The staff was helpful, especially the young lady at the tour desk. She mapped places for us and told us about a restaurant we liked so well, we ate there 4 times! (The Big Wave, in Kihei). We thought the hotel was an excellent bargain and would definitely stay there again.

    • Liked — great mattress; helpful young woman at tour desk
    • Disliked — the left turn onto the highway (but I could always turn right and go the long way around)

“One Star is generous”

Aston Maui Lu Resort

We stayed at the Aston Maui Lu for the first two days of our Maui vacation. We had one of the beach front rooms in the 400 building.

I was not expecting much from the hotel, but it was truly one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed at. Think beat-up version of a Motel 6. Not that motel 6 is horrible, just low end - the Maui Lu was low-end and in major need of renovation.

We had two rooms, both had clogged toilets, dilapidated furniture, and just an over-all run down feel.

The pool was also strange in that the sides were not straight up and down, they had a weird slope which made it almost impossible to climb out of the pool without finding the steps - frankly unsafe for young children.

When we arrived we immediately found we did not have enough towels in either room. When we called the front desk guessed why we were calling...duhhh fix the problem then!

The location was fine - the beach and the hotel property has great potential, it is just that the facility itself is just completely run down.

Anyway I would not ever recommend this hotel - ok maybe for $50, but surely not for $100 or more.

“One Horrible Night at the Maui Lu”

Aston Maui Lu Resort

Aston Maui Lu Resort
17 February 2008
My wife and I stayed in this "Hotel" for one night February 2nd as I was attending a Rotary function at the Marriott Waialea. This was the most disgusting hotel room I have ever stayed in. The carpets were dirty, the bathroom fixtures, although clean were showing rust, and the furniture appeared to be from the 60's. The bed was sagging. We requested a King bed but instead received two single beds. I will not stay at this hotel again and being a Kamaaina I do travel to Maui from my home on Oahu frequently. This hotel should be razed and a new resort built to todays standards. Hopefully all Aston Hotels are better maintained, but I would be skeptical to try one after this event. I just thought the tourist should know before they ruin their vacation by staying at the Maui Lu "Resort" NOT!
I will say that the staff was very courteous and responsive but that does not make up for the devastating condition of the facility.

Sincerely,

Oran Spotts

“One and a half stars (overrated)”

Aston Maui Lu Resort

Campbelltown NSW

7/7 found this review helpful

When I told my wife that we were closing our holiday by relaxing at a Maui hotel that costs over $250 a day (AUD) she was so excited. The photos show a high aerial shot with blue water in front of a long building. I thought the one and a half star rating was because the standards are different compared to Australia.

The entrance is impressive with a huge green lawn but when we got to our 'Ocean Front Room' my wife cried for hours (really). The furniture looked a hundred years old, the carpet was stained, worn and dirty. The sliding glass door had to be dragged open and the flyscreen door was worse. We had holes in our curtains, the split airconditioner was cooling only and very old. The bath tub had five lengths of old adhesive from previous antislip stickers. Do you want me to go on???

We had two dead cockroaches on the floor and the room needed airing out as it stunk. The TV was a small CRT model with the only upside that we had a good choice of pay TV channels to choose. We were on the ground floor of the two storey building and we could hear people stomping around for hours at night.

There are many hotels and motor inns in Kihei so keep looking. Our room was on the water but we had a small window facing the water which was above shoulder height. When you sat outside the room, the hedge along the boundary made it impossible to see the water. There is nothing in walking distance so we hired a car.

There are plenty of good shops and tourist beaches about a mile or more away. This is one old hotel. The only internet was at the registration lobby which was across the road from our complex. You had to take your laptop over there to access the free internet. There was no internet access from the rooms.

There are two buildings facing the ocean front. The one in the photo looked better. Our building was 90 degrees to the water so only our room could really see the ocean. There was no food or restuarant facilities at the hotel.

In the attached photos I took the room looks respectable but in real life it is old and you would need to shop around. Enjoy the photos of the best parts of what was on offer. Ray
