I am a little late in writing this review but felt I should do the place justice as there are only a few reviews of this lovely B+B. My boyfriend and I stayed here in May 2006 for 4 nights before heading up to Wai Ola in Lahaina. We split our trip between Kihei and Lahaina and it was the best decision we made for out Maui vacation.
The Two Mermaids is a couple of apartments under the owners house which surround a small, very clean pool in a private garden. We were lucky enough to be the only visitors for the first 2 nights and even when another couple arrived we had the pool to ourselves for the duration of our stay. We stayed in the Poolside Room which was brightly decorated and quite homely with a fold down double bed and mini kitchen area with a fridge ever stocked with POG (papaya, orange and guava juice), cream cheese, bagels etc by the mermaids. Everyone morning you receive your basket of fruit with ice cooler beneath - you get it early which was great for us cos we often went snorkelling around 6 - 7 am before anyone else was up and around. Peaceful waters are the best.
We didn't really see the mermaids much which was as we wanted but when we asked for anything they were very helpful. Its nice to have privacy but know there is someone there to help out if needed. There were little signs everywhere telling you what was required which was a bit odd but meant we didn't have to ask many questions.
Whilst staying in Kihei we visited Kama'ola beach for sunsets a lot which is very close and there are a number of nice places to eat down in the town. We had a car which I would recommend. It meant we could visit snorkelling spots like Alihi Cove (which was busy and not great vis), Wailai Beach, Ulua Beach and went down to La Perouse Bay - didn't go into water (possibility of dolphins !) but saw amazing lava flows. Joined the Kihei canoe club for day on the water which was tiring fun. We also did the Road to Hana from here which was fabulous - we drove all the way around - don't believe what you read about having to turn back. ;)
Highly recommend to stay at this place. Kihei was much quieter than Lahaina and the location allowed up to see more of the S of the island.
Recommend buying Maui Revealed Guide Book to make the most of your trip.
