My husband and I just returned from a 6 night stay at the Sheraton Maui. We had been somewhat concerned in December and January about the reviews we had read on Trip Advisor when we were deciding on a hotel with our travel agent at AAA. After much research we decided to have our travel agent book the room for us using our AAA discount rather than booking online. We had her request building 6 because we had read good things about the view as well as the peace and quiet. She was told that they couldn't guarantee, but they would do what they could. We got to the hotel from the airport just after 3:00 in the afternoon. We were met by the bell staff and checked in very quickly at the front of the building. We didn't even need to go in. After a beautiful flower lei greeting for both of us, we were shown to our room in building 6. It was a ways away from the main lobby and front of the building, but that was the point. We had booked a deluxe ocean front room and the view didn't disappoint. It was absolutely beautiful. There was a full view of Lanai'i and Molokai'i. We saw whales a couple of days, and people jumping off Black Rock when they dared. The room was plenty big with a king size bed. It was clean and cleaned well every day. The furnishings were fine but starting to show the signs of age and wear. It could have used new carpet or at least a carpet cleaning and maybe some new dressers. The pads on the lanai chairs were worn as well. But this was the only issue we had with the room.
The only issue we had with the hotel itself was one day it was very windy and blew all the "Do Not Disturb" signs on the ground. (There are open air hallways throughout) When we came back from snorkeling for the day, a sign was on our door saying they had attempted to clean our room but the "Do Not Disturb" sign was on the door. We had not put it there. Ours was still inside the room. We called housekeeping and they arranged to come clean at 3:30 after we had left again for the evening. They apologized for the inconvenience, and the room was cleaned when we returned.
The bulk of our stay was fantastic. We didn't have to fight to find pool chairs. We were always able to find two together when we wanted them. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The concierge was extremely helpful and patient in helping us book a dinner cruise for our anniversary. The Black Rock Steakhouse and the Lagoon Bar had very good food that was not priced any differently than comparable bars and restaurants here. The banana margarita at the Lagoon Bar was yummy! Don't order a lemonade from the Sundowner Bar. It's bar gun sweet/sour. Yuck!
We didn't mind the 5 minute walk from our room to the pool/beach area. It helped burn all those extra calories that you eat on vacation. Besides, we were away from the action and that kept the room itself a little quieter. (There was no problem with noise in any way, shape, or form.) We had a rental car but maybe wouldn't have needed one. There was transportation available to bring guests to Whaler's Village and Lahaina. Whaler's Village was close enough to walk to, but Lahaina was not. The regular trips were convenient, but sometimes very full - standing room only on the shuttle. We also walked to the Westin one evening for their Luau. Highly recommend that.. The food and drinks were fabulous and the entertainment was very good. Besides, there was no buffet line! Everything was served family style at the table.
Overall, my husband and I thought the extra money spent to get the view and the quiet away from the main part of the resort was well worth it. The 20.00 per day resort fee seemed a little much. We didn't use any of the services it paid for, but we knew about it ahead of time and made the decision to stay there despite that. So no complaints from us. The staff was great, and even the check out process was simple. We reviewed our charges which were correct, they printed a statement, took our keys, and we were on our way! The only bad part was that our vacation was over and we had to leave!
