My parents and I just returned from an 8 night stay at the Sheraton and I think we all agree that we picked the best hotel on he beach for what we want.
When you first arrive, you are greeted with a lei and they take you right up to your room to get settled. You simply go back to the front desk when you are more relaxed. We stayed in room 2402, which had an amazing view of the ocean, plus the pool area and the luau. We did take the walk to Building 6 just to see what all the hype was about and, while it is a little confusing, it wouldn't take more than a day or two to get used to. Plus, they have parking right there. So, if you get placed in Building 6, smile...the walk is nice and the views are wonderful.
Building 2, where we stayed, was perfect for us because it was right in the center of everything. The room was spacious enough for the three of us, with enough closet space and drawer room to please everyone. The lanai was a perfect way to wake up in the morning, and the bathroom....well, needless to say, coming back home to our bathroom was a huge downgrade. The closet contains a safe that tends to have a mind of its own and sometimes makes you repeat the closing process in a different way than you may have done previously. However, we definately made use of it. It stored a laptop, camera gear, as well as other knick knacks, so if you are worried about leaving certain personable items out in the open, I definately recommend using the safe.
The staff at the hotel really are warm and inviting. Everyone from the front desk to housekeeping always smiled and greeted with an "Aloha!" We only had one problem the first day. My parents are seriously allergic to down feathers in the pillows, so upon being taken to our room, we specifically asked to have them removed and replaced with hypoallergenic pillows. They were more than happy to change them, but when we got back from dinner (roughly 4 hours after the fact), we realized the pillows were never changed. Well, we were all exhausted by that point, having been on a 10.5 hour flight, with a 6 hour time difference from home. My dad was incredibly frustrated and we weren't able to call the front desk. My mom went down to the lobby area and they apologized and sent a maid up right away. What was nice though is the front desk receptionist called our room a few minutes later asking if we wanted the duvet removed, since it had feathers too. We really appreciated the fact that they took the time to make sure we were getting everything we needed.
Yes, the $20 daily resort fee is a bit outrageous, but you'll find that prices on Maui are all high. If you learn to just forget about it, you'll enjoy your vacation much more. I do recommend taking the 5 minute walk down to Whaler's Village. Definately check out Leilani's restaurant; delicious food, very reasonable prices compared to everywhere else. Also, if you plan to lay on the beach, rent beach chairs from Snorkel Bob's in Lahaina. 2 chairs, umbrella, and cooler for $15 a week...trust me, it's a steal.
No matter what kind of vacation you are looking for, Sheraton Maui is a great place to stay at. Whether you are a Pool fanatic (the pool is chilly, but very nice and big), a snorkel fiend (take the Teralani trip, or just snorkel out at Black Rock), or a shopaholic (Lahaina is a funky little town that you have to go to at least once), the Sheraton Maui is your best bet to ensure you get a great night sleep before your next fun-filled day!
