“Nice Stay”

ResortQuest Maui Kaanapali Villas

We had stayed here a few years ago and came back. We like the low profile of the hotel near the uncrowded beach (a building towering above as I sunbathe is a bit unnerving). The beach is beautiful. The room was clean and spacious enough for two. The staff was pleasant. The location was excellent. For the price we were pleased.

“BEWARE! Not up to Maui standards”

ResortQuest Maui Kaanapali Villas

If you don't mind staying at a low end Hotel for the Money you could still probably find a better deal somewhere else. The rooms (or most to my knowledge) are privately owned. In most cases this is common in Maui. The problem is that each owner designs their condo to their own taste. In our case this meant everying including kitchen and bathroom fixtures. This is evident when you walk around the resort at night and can see inside some of the condos' from the outside; and there lies the reason why some reviews are favorable and some are not. Some rooms are good and in our case horrible. The outside of the resort, OUTDATED. Problems with our room- kitchen that was hip in the 80's, bathroom that Jack tripper would have loved, clogged tub, dirty tile floor, broken fixtures, scary smoke detector, insects (not the cute kind), dirty stains on carpet (which showed up in photos), television with bad reception, far North Kaanapali location (although they do have a bus that will take you to the main Kaanapali hotels so you can catch thier bus to Lahina). Get the picture, we only stayed one night. This is not what you pay for when you travel to Hawaii. On the plus side the beach is beautiful.

Management Response

Maui Kaanapali Villas is just completing a $1.4 million renovation of the pools and grounds. Two jet spas, bar-b-ques, water features and new landscaping have been added. The entire hotel, inside and out, is being up-graded. All units are individually owned condominiums. Not all units are in the ResortQuest Hawaii resort program, so be careful when you make your reservations. RQH guests can ask to be moved to other units in our resort program to meet their expectations. There really is no excuse or need to be unhappy at the RQH Maui Kaanapali Villas. Negative comments could have been fixed at the front desk.

Maui Kaanapali Villas was awesome! Joe was the" best " @ the front desk. The location was perfect on Kaanapali Beach it was quite, yet close to plenty of activities. The resort was undergoing renovations on the grounds. Will stay here again!

“Love Old Hawaiian Style”

ResortQuest Maui Kaanapali Villas

Just returned (this evening) from the Kaanapali Villas. This was are third stay here in the last 4 years. We love the old Hawaiian feel of this place. It is very simple, with low rise buildings and very friendly staff. Because of the pool renovation they wanted to move us to their sister property "The Shores" up the road, but we insisted on staying at the Villas because of the proximity to the beach and to the main Kaanapali Beach Walk. I have to admit, the room (a one bedroom) is in dire need of updating. It had 1980's decor. It was comfortable with actually 1 and 1/2 baths. We were only in the room to sleep, so the decor was really no big deal. The beach access is fantastic and the Castaway Cafe is always a favorite (except this trip they had a problem with Pineapple bugs). The pool is almost ready, but we didn't miss it since the beach is where we hang out. We love the beach at MKV, although it is amazing how many more people are on it since now the Westin is next door. Four years ago there was no one on the beach when you looked north. But now with the Westin Villas there are huge crowds up that direction. The MKV seems to be immuned to it, since their property is about 1/10th the size as the Westin. This is one of the reasons why we love MKV so much. There are not hords of people. One disappointment was Christmas dinner, the Villas recommended the Royal Lahania next door. The service was the worst I've ever encountered and for a meal that cost $200 for 4 people, it should have been primo. I don't know if they were short staffed or what. Our server acted like he had never waited on a table in his life... it was pathetic. We should have left. All in all we had a wonderful time at the Villas ( and three days prior at Napili). We hope that with all the new building going on (the Westin Villas, Lahania Villas and another high-rise up toward Kahana) that MKV will not loose it's true Hawaiian spirit. We love MKV and hope to return soon.

“Not recommended”

ResortQuest Maui Kaanapali Villas

"Kaanapali Villas" is an old resort that is in bad need of renovation. If, in spite of this review, you do decide to rent one of the condos here, at least make sure to stay away from the ground-floor units. We had a misfortune to rent one of these (vrbo.com listing #114186, unit #109), and while the owner furnished it reasonably well, the lack of natural light, noticable "moldy" smell (one of us had a asthma flare up) and showers with major draining issues forced us to move to an adjacent hotel after only two nights. Our unit's lanai had a view of the main property driveway, and the entire hotel really has no grounds to speak of. The owner also failed to mention that the only large pool on the property was closed and being rebuilt. To make things worse, it is practically impossible to avoid the construction area on your way to the beach. All in all, this was not an experience we were looking for during our first ever trip to Hawaii. Fortunately, there were rooms available at the wonderful Sheraton resort just half-a-mile away, which proved to be a night-and-day improvement over Kaanapali Villas, at a slight premium in rate. Basically, the only advantage Kaanapali Villas has is a kitchen in the condo - you decide if this is the most important thing for you in Hawaii.
