We just returned from 8 nights at Kahana Sunset. We loved it. The grounds were clean, the beach and view beautiful, our unit was up to date with 2 large porches. We had no air conditioning - which is fine in March.. You should be sure to check on your unit if that is important! With the windows and doors open (there we no bugs) it was comfortable. Also, you pay for the wireless - $10.00 a day or $40.00 (I think) for the week. Our car was too full to stop at COSTCO - but the Napili Market up the road was fine. We BBQ'd on one of the four grills on the property. There are 2 great take out places next to the Napili Market - Maui Taco and Mama's Ribs. We did not eat dinner out ,but ate breakfast at the Napili Kai Resort - just north. The view is spectacular and the snorkeling at the public beach next door is great. We ate lunch at Aloha Mixed Plate in Lahaina - right on the water. Again, a great place. For surfing - call Tide and Kiva Rivers www.riverstothesea.com - we had a group of 9 with 5 kids and these guys are great! Snorkeling is good on this part of the island. Be careful though - many of the snorkeling areas have no lifeguards or facilities. We would stay at Kahana Sunset again - we booked directly with KS - but met other people who booked through owners. There were lots of owners staying there the last week of March - always a good sign

Business serviceWe took our 3 kids and my mom and stayed in F-6. It is a nicely updated unit and was very clean. We decided to splurge and stay ocean front and we were so glad we did! This was the best vacation we have ever had. We saw rainbows and whales from our lanai and the turtles come to the cove at the property every evening. We stopped at Costco and bbq'd fish and chicken there at the condo bbq's. It was so easy and pleasant to stay and eat there- premium ocean view every night. We had originally thought we would eat breakfast and lunch at the condo and eat all of our dinners out but we wound up only eating out three times. I had done a lot of research on where to stay. We knew we needed a condo- my youngest son eats constantly so a hotel room doesn't work. The Kaanapali resorts were out of our budget and to be honest, we found that it was nice to be a little off the beaten path and away from the crowds but still close to everything. This is a very family oriented property- I wouldn't recommend it for honeymooners but it is perfect for families with kids of all ages. There was one night there were noisy teens cavorting on the beach- but they were quieted down. I have read a lot of the negative reviews. If you are used to 5 star resorts, you will probably want to stay elsewhere. It is not a brand new luxury complex by any means. Also, it is important that you know what you are getting into unit-wise and location wise in the complex. For our family, who just requires cleanliness and comfort but not necessarily the Ritz, this was ideal because of the beautiful beach and proximity of the beach and water to our unit. We would come again any time and hated to leave!

Business serviceLet me start by saying that the pool and the center area are well kept and nice. The beach is small, but secluded and clean. One thing to know... the grounds are maintained by one group and the rental of the units (and hence the upkeep, I guess) are handled by another.
We had a 1 bedroom unit in the E building at the very end of the row of units. E1E was the place. Do not, under any circumstances, stay in this smelly dump! As we made our way along the row we were still 3 units away from ours and started to smell a moldy, mildew type smell. As we reached ours, we noticed that all of the windows were left open although it was vacant... Uh oh, I thought... little did I know the stink hole that I was about to go into. We paid $240 a night and couldn't stand to be in this place! Let me also tell you that I am not a very picky person when it comes to where I am staying. I have stayed many places in Europe with wires hanging out of the wall and no bathrooms, etc. This was by far the most uncomfortable dump I have ever had to pay to stay in. It wasn't worth $40 a night, let alone the $240 that we paid. The carpet was pretty nasty looking, which normally wouldn't bother me much, but I have no idea what may have been in that carpet since the place reeked so bad. The bed was actually comfortable, but I never would have been able to get close to my wife in this one as there were two very deep impressions on the bed that our bodies sort of sunk into. Well, after seeing (and more importantly smelling) the unit, I went to the management, who at first acted like they didn't know there was a problem, but then let it slip that those 1 bedroom units don't have good ventilation and they "sometimes smell like mildew"... Well, this was certainly one of those "sometimes". They promised to look into other units and that I could maybe move, but they were all full until the next day. We were staying 3 nights, so I went to the office after the first night of stink-o-rama and I was given a keycard to check out an open room in the C building. Unfortunately, there was already someone staying there! Oops? Thank goodness that I didn't key into it and find someone in their birthday suit (although it may have helped Kahana Sunset get a better rating). When I returned to the management desk, I was told that some owners must have came back without telling management that they were coming. Whatever... Next on the management fix list was sending Ramona the head housekeeper to "check it out". Like Ramona didn't already know what she was in for. She went into the unit and started spraying an aerosol can of stuff around in the closets and the bedroom. Ramona has done this before, trust me, as she didn't waste any time going to what she thought was the source of the stink, the back wall of the unit. It did nothing to mask the smell... an analogy would be spraying a few squirts of chanel # 5 into the Cleveland sewer system.
To make this long story even longer, I was forced to stay in this terrible condo that I couldn't even try to cook in or to enjoy the use of the huge big screen tv because it smelled like the back side of a water buffalo.
I received an email from the manager asking how I liked my stay after I came back home. I responded by telling him all of the problems with our unit and asking to be contacted about it. It is now 2 weeks later, and I haven't heard from them at all. No surprise there. Management knows what they are doing with these dumps, so don't get caught...
So... I would never dream of giving the Kahana Sunset a dime again. Don't go to this place for any reason. My brother and friends stayed in the C building and his and some of the other units were not as bad as mine, but any organization that would take advantage of people who are so far from home with no real recourse doesn't deserve and therefore shouldn't get your business.

ServiceLOVE this place. We've stayed several times but, unfortunately, the most recent trip was way back in September. Kahana Sunset is such an amazing place- private beach, beautiful lush gardens... you won't want to leave! We generally end up scrapping a lot of our "sightseeing" plans to hang out at the resort- maybe BBQ or just lounge.
One thing to be aware of is that the units are individually owned so there is a huge range of "updatedness" (is that a word?) Our favorite so far has been unit B11. It is tastefully updated and the location is great- over the gardens, but with a full ocean view. Can't wait to go back!
