My wife and I (we're retired) spent the entire month of March 2008 at this beautiful new hotel (opened in September 2007). Our experience was outstanding.
The two room suite had a functional kitchen with a full refrigerator, a stove top, microwave, toaster, coffee maker and waste disposal in the sink. The cupboards were stocked with pots, pans, glasses, dinner waye, cups and flatware. Everything was in tip top condition, The bedroom featured the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in. The pillows were ample and soft and the linens were crisp and clean. The bath had a tub/shower and there were plenty of towels and wash cloths.
A desk, office chair and comfortable sleeper couch were in the living room along with a nice table and chairs that my wife used as a vanity.
Also featured were cables to hook up your laptop and free internet connection (wifi). There were two flat panel TVs, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. A video game control and hookup was available for extra charge.
The door to our room had a gap around it that let in a breeze from the hallway. We complained about it and management had weather stripping installed which eliminated the problem and they promised to have the building contractor repair the door properly. Our bathroom sink stopper didn't stay shut and maintenence promptly took care of the problem.
Each morning there was an excellent buffet breakfast featuring scambled eggs, bacon or sausage, fried potatoes, hot oatmeal, cold cereals, a fruit bar with cut melon, mandarin oranges, peaches, yogurt and cottage cheese. Some mornings the menu varied with biscuits and gravey. The menu selection always included Beligum waffels, whipped cream, strawberries (frozen), syrup, powdered suger. Apples and bananas were also available along with fruit juices, 2 percent and skim milk, coffee and tea.
In late afternoon, Monday through Thursday, a light meal was available. Somedays it was meatloaf and potatos, or tacos, or lasagna, or spagettii and meatballs, etc. On Saint Patrick's Day a special meal of corned beef and cabbacge with potatos was served. The meal was accompanied with a salad bar with various dressings available along with draft beer and wine. The excellent meals came with the price of the room.
The hotel has special rates for long term stays and the moderate cost of the room coupled with the good breakfast and light dinner made it quite a bargin and money saver.
The entire staff was excellent and helpful from front desk to room attendant to maintenance, management and kitchen. Everyone we encountered was nice, professional and helpful. The hotel was very clean and the staff took an obvious pride in keeping it that way. the grounds were beautifully maintained.
The location of the hotel was outstanding. While it is close to the airport we never heard any airplane noise beacuse the hotel is not under any flight path and there are no flights during the night, I believe from midnight to 6:00 AM. Very quiet. We were there during spring break and there were many families and a lot of children in the hotel. None-the-less it was quiet.
The Hotel is located on a former US Navy Training base which has been redone over the years and is beautifully landscaped with walking trails, benches everywehere with plenty of lighting. A very pleasent place and we think the best place in all of San Diego. There is a Von's and a Trader Joe's just a short walk from the hotel along with some good restaurants.
We did not have a car during our stay and instead relied on public transportation. A metro senior flex-pass, good for one month, cost $16 each and was good for any bus or trolly in the excellent San Diego County transportation system. It also provided discounted fares for riding the Sounder Train. You can buy the senior flex-passes at Von's.
All in all this is a first class hotel that deserves four stars from AAA not just the three stars they have awarded. Great for families with children. We highly recomment it.
It is in a safe location where you can walk around at night.
