Holiday Inn Express Sea World

San Jose

Hotel is just off the freeway, not a great area for walking around, but good enough for an overnight stay to access the park - only 10 mins away at most.
No freeway noise. Clean. Nice staff.
Didn't use the pool.
Breakfast quite good, a lot of choices.
Garage parking.
Good value for money

“OK - but area is a little seedy...”

I stayed at this hotel with my son on a visit to Sea World at the end of March 2008. I booked through the Sea World web site.

At the end of the day at Sea World I called for directions to the hotel and the person who answered the phone could not tell me how to get there from Sea World! He also said that no one else was there who could help me! He was able to tell me how to get there from the freeway but didn't know if I should go north or south from Sea World - after driving north on the 5 for 10 miles I turned around and found that it was the next exit just south of Sea World. By the time got there I was not a happy camper but tried to give him the benefit of the doubt as he was new.

Driving in from the freeway I almost headed to another hotel that I was familiar with in downtown San Diego becuase of the fact that there were strip clubs and adult book stores on every corner for several blocks coming off of the freeway. After I turned toward the hotel it got a little better but, being there by myself with just my son, it was a litte unnerving (sp?)!

Check in went fine but there wasn't enough parking in the lot closest to our room so we had to walk across several dark parking lots to get to the building. The room was very clean and nice for a hotel like this. Although we had no problems I was a bit nervous that the rooms open out onto a balcony that can be accessed by anyone.

We had planned on spending the morning in the hotel pool until check out but it wasn't a very good one - surrounded by cinder block walls at the back of the Bakers Square restaurant right on the parking lot. Not a place I really wanted to hang out for the morning!

We did get a free voucher for a free children's breakfast at Bakers Square so that was a plus.

I would look around a little more for another hotel if you are travelling with children. The area is a little seedy and it really isn't that close to Sea World. You can do better for the money.

“Not good for families”

Holiday Inn Express Sea World

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights with two young children. While it is close to Sea World, what we did not realize when booking the reservation was that there are adult establishments on almost every corner in the surrounding neighborhood. It is definitely not a neighborhood to walk around in. When we arrived a huge convention was going on at the Sports Arena. It was extremely busy and the crowd was rowdy. Directly across from our room was the fire department so we heard sirens off and on all day. There are a lot of homeless in the area also. As for the room, it was very clean and the bunk beds for the kids were nice. However, the room was cramped, the air was horrible and the voucher for "kids eat free" at the Baker's Square on site was only good if the kids ate off the kids' menu. They still charged them for drinks too. We ended up cutting our stay short of the 5 nights we had planned to stay. We would NEVER stay there again.

Stayed at the holiday inn express for 2 nights from christmas eve.

This was probably the best hotel experience we had during our 10 day trip to Southern California and Las Vegas (bearing in mind that we were travelling on a budget).

The staff were very helpful and friendly. Rooms were clean and spacious. There was a varied choice on offer at breakfast and the complimentary parking was secure.

The only slight downside was the single glazed windows which let in a bit too much street noise. This was however quite a minor issue.

“Nice hotel / not-so-nice area”

We were a little bit scared when we drove to the hotel because we drove through a bad area with adult clubs and a somewhat industrial area. The hotel itself is nice and the staff is extremely nice and friendly. Everyone we met that works there was friendly and helpful. Free wi-fi in the rooms is really nice. The beds were comfortable for us and they had hard and soft pillows to choose from. The amenities are nice for hotel amenities. I prefer to bring my own. The heater was extremely noisy and, although we had a "quiet" room, the freeway noise was obvious. I did two loads of laundry with no issues. Breakfast service is nice with coffee, tea, cinnamon rolls, cereal, yogurt and fruit. Lots of juices to choose from. It was nice to go down at night to get some tea for my husband and they had the beverages available. Really nice feature. We didn't visit the pool but we wouldn't have wanted to. It was tiny and looked squeezed into a very small area. The hotel is great but I wish it were in a different location. We had breakfast at a nearby IHOP and it was across the street from a Hustler adult club. Freeway access was easy and it is really close to SeaWorld!! Parking was not an issue for us because it was winter but only has a small lot that is covered and under the hotel. Not sure how it would be in the peak season. We liked the hotel but would not stay there again. We'll try Hotel Circle again and keep looking.
