“Beautiful Harlem Flophouse”

The Harlem Flophouse

4 of 5 stars
Bainbridge Island, WA
Sep 29, 2008

We just returned from a two night stay in New York at the Harlem Flophouse. This beautifully renovated historic home has four rooms with shared bathrooms on two separate floors. It was quiet, comfortable and conveniently located near the A train.
We marveled at the extensive work that has restored this home to its former magnificence. The lovely woodwork, tin ceilings and period wallpaper, complete with a fireplace in each room, was gorgeous to view.
The only thing to have made it more convenient for us would have been a small refrigerator, (or access to one) and internet as well. Otherwise it was certainly reasonably priced and an oasis in the bustling city.

“Herriott's Harlem”

The Harlem Flophouse

Sep 14, 2008

Having read the reviews was curious to experience the Harlem Flophouse and was certainly not disappointed. if anything the house exceeded my expectations and it fulfilled everything it promised on its website. If you are a romantic this house is for 'you'. For the nerd, redneck or metro mover the lack of tv, ac, hair drier, pants press is perhaps to hard to handle. For those with very little soul the subtle charm of this wonderful house is wasted on them.

Our visit to the Harlem Flophouse made our stay in NY unforgettable. The visit to the house itsself is like a trip back in time. All rooms have their own character, each different but decorated with a lot of style.
We have been very well received and the owner can give great advise on what to visit in the neighbourhood.
We have already booked our next stay at the Harlem Flophouse and can only recommend this place.

“Wonderfully atmospheric”

The Harlem Flophouse

Aug 5, 2008

The Harlem Flophouse is a wonderfully old-fashioned guesthouse in Harlem, a short walk from the 125 St/Malcolm X Blvd Metro, in turn a 15-
20 minute ride from Penn Station. The owner was helpful and friendly, providing useful information on the surrounding area. My room was clean, spacious, and beautifully furnished - in keeping with the atmospheric dark-wood interior of the rest of the house.

“Don't know why it was rated so high...go somewhere else!”

The Harlem Flophouse

3/3 found this review helpful

I chose this bed and breakfast based on the reviews on this site. I believe that the owner or his friends must have written them because it was not a pleasant experience.

First I will start out with the only two positive things; the room was clean when we arrived and the Brownstone is only a few blocks from the subway. Thats it!

When we arrived, we were met by the owner Renee who was very cold and did even give his name until we asked. We were then immediately told to remove our shoes while in the house (we could live with that). I asked about breakfast because the site indicated $100.00; I thought that it was a mistake. We were informed that it was correct because he (Renee) would have to make it. No problem we can eat elsewhere. I then asked about the courtyard on the property. We could not determine how to get out the back door to sit outside. We were told that the courtyard was private and for his use only (bummer... it was pleasant).

The room size was ok, without air and WITHOUT adequate light. Ladies if you need to comb your hair or apply makeup, bring a mirrored light! The lights were so dim in the bedroom and bath that I could not put my contacts on. Also only the second floor bath was equipped for a shower (no shower curtain). No having light was the worse aspect of this stay!!

We were NOT informed that we need to bring our own towels. After the first day of site seeing, we return to the room and the bed and linens had not been changed. We thought maybe we needed to change them ourselves so we called Renee who was never around on the property, and asked for some clean towels. He told us that there is a $25.00 a day "freshing up" charge. We were rather surprised so replied that we only want the fresh towels that day. Renee told us that we still had to pay $25.00 for the fresh towels. BRING your own towels and maybe linen if you do not want to be charged $25.00 a day.

Also there is construction going on where the adjacent building is being removed so we had noise at 6:00 am. Renee suppled us with a little map of the area; no conversation no directions. The only positive contact we had was with his "friend" who we did not see until we were leaving; he was very nice and even called us a taxi.

This place is probably fine for single men or traveling teens who don't care about how they look when dress.

Management Response

We realize that The Harlem Flophouse is not suited for everyone. It reflects rather our personal preferences for cost, service and accommodation based upon our own extensive travels throughout the world. We are happy to have this opportunity to clarify what we do and do not offer so that travelers will be able to make a considered choice before booking.

The following policies are clearly stated on our web site and on the form that guests must accept in order to register:

Housekeeping
The price quoted is the basic room price. This price includes a set of fresh sheets and towels. Additional housekeeping (fresh towels, room tidy, etc.) can be added at $25 per visit.

Breakfast
Breakfast is not included in room price. A luxuious traditional southern brunch, serving two people, including eggs, sausage, grits, biscuts with gravy, champagne, juice and espresso can be added at an additional charge of $100.

(There are many fine options for breakfast, ranging from the simple to the extravagant, within a short walking distance. A map that indicates our favorites and other points of interest is provided free of charge.)

These policies accurately reflect our costs and help us to maintain extremely competitive prices for travelers who DO NOT require a higher level of service.

We enjoy our guests and are always courteous. We have numerous repeat visitors and a large clientele based upon word of mouth. Many of them have posted very positive reviews on this and other web sites.

Ben is an employee of mine. We take pains to inform our guests when they book that there is not a full time concierge. Frequently there is someone available but with only 4 guest rooms it would be cost prohibitive to provide 24 hour service. We can however always be contacted by phone to answer any questions. We respond to messages left as promptly as possible. We also try to be available for a guests departure and are happy to call a car service.

Every room is a large and airy, with high ceilings and completely restored. Close attention has been given to it's Victorian heritage and Harlem history. There are NO TV's, in-room phones or air conditioners. There are however in every room two large, fully functional windows that face either the garden or a tree lined street of Brownstones. A fan is also provided in every room. The 2 SHARED bathrooms feature antique claw foot tubs, skylights and custom stone tile work. These bathrooms have been cited in many publications for their exceptional beauty. They are cleaned twice daily and usually well maintained by our guests. By New York City standards the neighborhood is considered exceptionally quiet. There is a phone in the lobby free to use for local calls, with the number of a reliable car service imprinted on its side. A wi-fi signal is available throughout the premises and free to use for our guests. Please ask us for the password.

The Harlem Flophouse has been noted for its beauty by numerous magazines, newspapers and travel guides. It has also been featured in many fashion shoots and employed as a location for an independent feature film.

We ask that guests remove their shoes upon entering. This helps us to maintain our high standards for cleanliness and also for quiet and courtesy to our other guests.

On June 16th 2008, without notice, Gateway Demolition Corp under contract with The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development began demolition of a decrepit property next to ours. Work was completed on June 30th.
