I booked this hotel through intervalworld.com I love them. This is a company that sells "getaways" to timeshare owners. I paid about $300 for the whole week. This is a FANTASTIC deal to stay right in the French Quarter. If you have to pay the regular hotel price, you may want to consider a different place. On Esplanade, I also recommend the Lamothe House.
I really liked Hotel de la Monnaie. It says "wading pool" on the website, but it's really about hot-tub depth or deeper, so bring a swim suit. It's by the soda machine and after a long day of touristing, it was great to dip my feet in the pool and enjoy a Diet Dr. Pepper. The beds are comfy, and the bathroom is spacious. The kitchen is tiny but the fridge holds sodas, and the coffee pot makes coffee, so you're in NEW ORLEANS and they have great food. Don't cook, eat out.
The location is pretty good depending on what you'd like to do. If all you want to do is party on Bourbon Street, it's quite a few blocks to walk, It's still comfortable to walk, but you won't be able to hang off your balcony and throw beads at drunks or anything.
The hotel IS close to the following: It's right across the street from the old US Mint, now a museum. It's maybe a block from the French Market. Central Grocery, Cafe Du Monde, Jackson Square , and St. Louis Cathedral are all close. There is a street car stop right next to the hotel too!
Hotel de la Monnaie is on Esplanade street, which is lovely to walk up and down. It's a broad street with a neutral ground. Both sides are lined with mansions and other architecturally interesting buildings.
There are many great restaurants and bars close by. My fave bar, Checkpoint Carlie's, is right up the street.
