“Hotel Intercontinental vs Ritz Carlton”

Intercontinental Buckhead Atlanta

We live in Georgia but have stayed at the Intercontinental twice when we had wine dinners in Atlanta. On our most recent stay we got a chance to compare both the club level at the Intercontinental and at the Ritz Carlton on the same night. Either is your best bet for a luxury level hotel in Atlanta's Buckhead area. Intercontinental is upscale and modern but just doesn't have the 'it' factor of the Ritz. The Ritz is a bit dated and worn but the service is just that bit extra. The lobby bar at the ritz is always hopping even early on saturday while their high tea is still being poured. The Ritz club level had decent wine and champagne on ice, tons of good appitizers (tuna tartar was pretty darn good) while Intercontinental had beer and wine but pretty limited poor quality choices and not nearly the same spread of food. Our club level room at the IC was same sized as a regular room and it smelled like pee even after I called and asked them to come see if they could freshen it up. The IC bar scene is straight out hip hop which I personally like but others might feel out of place. Anyone would enjoy the Ritz's bar especially if you like people watching. Both club levels had the exact same type people (read older and rich). the IC rooms I have stayed in before are very nice, modern and have tons of amenities. i just think our room this trip was a dud but I was more interested in the club level areas and the lobby bars anyway. Price wise our IC room rate was half of what the ritz carlton was charging so dollar for dollar I think IC is a better deal but I must say I really like hanging out at the Ritz.

“Some very special touches”

Intercontinental Buckhead Atlanta

Apr 5, 2008

We spent 4 nights here at the end of March. We have stayed in many Intercontinentals throughtout the world and the existing reviews of the Atlanta property are accurate. We, too, stayed on the Club floor and the Club room facilities, breakfast, afternoon tea, cocktail snacks, etc are excellent value for money. Rooms are well equipped, beds superbly comfortable, staff genuinely helpful. You know this is a different place when a member of staff says "Welcome home" to you as your enter the hotel! And, yes, you do feel at home. Hotel 5mins walk from the Metro and is a safe area to walk in. Some decent restaurants in the vicinity and a good shopping mall. Hotel courtesy taxi service within 2 miles very handy. World of Coca Cola worth the visit, even for real grown up adults. It takes 2 hours and was very interesting. The downtown area isn't, however, very pleasant and has a slight uncomfortable feel to it. I've lived in London for over 30 years, and unlike many of my female friends, travel alone late at night on the tube and never feel afraid, but I wouldn't have liked to have been on my own in this area at any time of day. Strange for a business district.

“Best Nights Sleep”

Intercontinental Buckhead Atlanta

Feb 17, 2008

My husband & I have stayed at this hotel 5 times. We lived 2 hours south of the city & would stay at the Intercontinental when we went to concerts or shows. This is a gorgeous and truly luxurious hotel & has definitely earned a 4 star. The rooms are so comfortable & the beds are like sleeping on a cloud. The bathroom is beautiful with black and white marble, deep soaking tub & a separate shower. You are close to two high end malls & many other shopping plazas. If you want to stay in Buckhead, this is the place to be.

Hotels I have stayed in for a long while. Stayed on the club level with free wine all day, canapes during the evening, high tea in the afternoon and breakfast in the morning. Didn't want to get out of the bed it was so comfortable. Everything about the hotel was great. Atlanta's layout is a bit strange. There is downtown, midtown and Buckhead. Buckhead is nice with a huge mall and plently of restaurants including Mortens Steak.

“A Night Away”

Intercontinental Buckhead Atlanta

We had a wonderful stay and would come back and stay in the Club level again. As is often reviewed with other hotels in the area (Bulkhead), the nightlife crowd can add an element to the hotel bar they may or may not appeal to you. For us, it was not appealing. Because we are from Atlanta we prepared for this by staying on Club level where the atmosphere was calm, the staff impeccable, and we were able to have a few cocktails in a more quiet environment. As has appeared in many reviews, Atlanta has a large, mostly Hip Hop, music scene which often draws many partiers to the Buckhead area on weekends. This may or may not appeal to you so plan accordingly when visiting during the weekend. The Intercontinental offers a fabulous complimentary shuttle service that can be used to reach upscale shopping and fantastic restaurants. I would definitely encourage speaking to the concierge about restaurant suggestions when visiting!
