This was my first extensive trip to Atlanta and I loved it! I wish I could say the same for the Intercontinental Hotel.
First let me say, if we had paid full price for this hotel, I'd be a raving maniac. We had hit up Priceline and paid $79.00 for the usual $360.00 room. Good deal right? Wrong. Sometimes you pay more for going cheap.
Although they stuck us on the 4th floor (we joked with another guest staying on the 4th floor -- he paid through Priceline also), the room turned out to be adequate. We asked to be upgraded to the club level at check-in but were told it would cost an additional $100.00 per day. Yikes!
Although the shower was lame, the bed was comfortable. $10.95 is insulting for wireless in a room this expensive. In most less expensive hotels, this service is free.
An important fact about the mini bar refrigerator:
Do not remove or move ANYTHING unless you intend to consume it. Everything in the mini bar has sensors. If you remove anything for longer than 20 seconds, you will automatically billed for it. We learned this the hard way when trying to chill some pre-purchased bottled water. Apparently using their refrigerator is a no-no.
Coffee is free in the lobby from 6:30 - 7:30am. After that, good luck.
Our first night, due to not being able to get cold water, we were reduced to water over ice and used the glasses provided in the room. The next night, clean glasses were not provided. This in a $360.00 room OR was this just the Priceline room? I'm not sure.
An important fact about the parking garage:
When we arrived and self-parked in the garage, we were astonished at the prices:
0 - 2 hours -- $7.00
2 - 4 hours -- $9.00
4 - 8 hours -- $11.00
8 - 24 hours -- $17.00
They charged us every time we left the garage and returned. It was outrageous. When we complained at check-out, the clerk said the attendant is supposed to ask if we were guests of the hotel. Apparently, the maximum they should be charging is $17.00 within a 24 hour period but as I stated earlier, if you drove in and then out, they charged $7.00. Many times, my husband waited at the curb while I ran up to the room because we didn't want to pay the fee. One time, we parked at the mall and walked to the hotel to avoid the fee. Beware.
I wouldn't have minded paying more for the room without being nicholed and dimed every time we turned around. If we had paid the full amount for the room and under the same circumstances, we would have spent one night and checked out and went somewhere else the next morning.
There is nothing special about this hotel (appearance or personnel) to warrant the price or the attitude. There are far too many upscale hotels in the Buckhead area with many on the way to have to waste your time/money.
