The property itself appears very nice. The lobby of the hotel is large and open with many contemporary chairs, sofas and grouped seating areas. The bar and gift shop are located right off the main lobby. My room was spacious, clean and comfortable with a great open air balcony overlooking Atlanta accessed through a sliding glass door (parents of small children take note). The Lather bath products are great and a definite plus in the opinion of my wife. While not personally handicapped, my assigned handicapped-accessible room seemed to flow well and had wide passages between walls and furniture to allow wheelchair passage. The bathroom was huge. The work area had three available 110VAC outlets located within 2 feet of the desk which is better than many other hotels. Wireless access appeared to be $12/day which is a pet peeve of mine when Hampton Inn provides wireless for free. Elevators were quick and responsive (no long waits for service). The surrounding area is typical of Downtown/Midtown Atlanta with numerous other businesses (including Emory Crawford Hospital), relatively few residences (though more are under construction) and unfortunately more than a few homeless and panhandlers on surrounding streets. Atlanta dining landmark The Varsity (a must do!) is on the opposite corner of the block the hotel sits upon. I would not walk by myself out of sight of the hotel doormen at night though as a small group we didn’t experience any problems at 11:00 p.m. Georgia Tech is three blocks away just across I-75/85 and is an easy walk (again, groups are safer). I did hear numerous police and ambulance sirens but it didn’t prevent me from sleeping and didn’t seem much worse than other downtown Atlanta hotels in which I’ve stayed. The downside of this hotel was the service. Our group of 25 was given our welcome packets and key card envelopes complete with room numbers at the front desk, and then found that none of the key card envelopes actually had key cards inside. After 15 minutes we finally received our key cards. Upon entering my room I was surprised to find the end table sitting in the middle of the room, the phone jack faceplate removed, wires laying on the floor, and phone service testing equipment lying on the floor. Upon calling the front desk (the phone worked fine) they said they would send someone up right away to remove the test equipment which I agreed to after first offering to change rooms. In less than 5 minutes a very polite and apologetic technician arrived. I expected him to take the tools and leave because I was tired and wanted to take a brief nap before showering and dressing for dinner. The tech then proceeded to spend 30 minutes working on the phones while I carried on doing everything but take a nap, shower and dress like I wanted. I did not ask him to leave earlier becuase I thought he would be done in short order. Finally he determined he could not fix the problem, informed me one of the phones (there were three in the room) and the high-speed internet access were not working, and left. The tech was certainly helpful and tried to be as fast and unobtrusive as possible, but there is no reason why the hotel should have checked me into a room that was undergoing maintenance before I arrived! Later when I asked the front desk to hold an envelope for me until I returned later that evening the front desk clerk complied but didn’t go out of his way to appear welcoming or helpful; check-out the next day the front desk clerk was much more helpful and polite. Overall I give the physical property high marks, but as others have noted, the service is not at the level I expect from such a hotel. Despite the service glitches, I would stay at this property again.
