We enjoyed a 7 night stay at the Maui Prince in April 2008 and had a wonderful time! I was a little disappointed with the rooms. Like other reviews have stated, the furniture is dated and ours was really beat up. The carpet in our room was really dirty and needed some serious cleaning. We traveled with another couple who had the room next door and their furniture and carpets looked a whole lot better than ours. I guess we got the "party" room. The bathrooms need some serious updating...the tile on the walls looks original to the hotel being built. But the rooms were clean and the sheets were nice. I really loved our balcony, it was large enough to fit a table, two chairs and a drying rack for your wet clothes, we could have easily fit 2 more chairs out there. The hotel has a luau on certain days of the week and we were able to sit on our balcony and watch the show, that was a nice way to wind down our day.
The hotel grounds are lovely. And the walk to the beach isn't bad at all. And speaking of the beach...I feel it is the best in Maui. Quiet and secluded, it was just wonderful. They have plenty of lounge chairs to go around, which was one complaint we had in Cancun. We had to rent an umbrella a couple days (these pale Minnesotains got a little too much sun the first few days) and the young man who brought it out for us was wonderful. He patiently waited while we chose a spot and he even set up our chairs for us.
We ate breakfast every morning at the Cafe Kiowai. The food is expensive, but it is very good. The atmosphere is amazing, it is very open and airy. Which leads to my only complaint about the cafe. They have a definate bird problem here. Because it is so open (you can sit indoors or outside) there are birds constantly flying inside the cafe, sitting on tables, chairs and even the buffet. I would NOT recommend eating the buffet...I actually saw birds eating off the spoons used on the buffet. And I saw bird droppings on the sneeze guard, which really grossed me out. We ordered off the menu, which I felt a lot better about. If you do try the buffet, one word of advice...DO NOT leave your table unattended at any time. One couple went back to the buffet together and a whole flock of birds attacked their table, it was like something out of an Alfred Hitchcock movie. When they came back there was bird poop all over their plates and the table. The wait staff immediatley helped them to another table, but still..it was nasty.
The other complaint we had was about the public computers. This hotel charges $8 for 15 minutes of use, which I find utterly ridiculous. When we travel, we normally get on the hotel computers to print out our boarding passes for our trip home the day before we leave. But at these prices, who would do that? When we talked to the concierge about it she told us she would be happy to take care of it for us. We gave her our flight info and when we returned to the hotel that evening she had our boarding passes waiting for us at the front desk. Problem solved.
I would recommend this hotel for anyone staying in Maui with the warning not to expect The Four Seasons. The rooms are dated and are in need of an upgrade. But the staff and atmosphere is wonderful!!! It is definately a quiet and relaxing place.
