“3rd trip to FS Maui and I continue to be impressed.”

Well we just returned from our 3rd trip at Four Seasons Maui. This place is so so wonderful. Each time we leave we are already disussing our next possible trip. This time we were with our first child who is 7 months. The staff is so helpful with kids, they set up things in your room as requested such as bottle warmer, high chair, diaper genie, crib, extra refirg. ect. They also had toys in the tub and our daughters name in colorful sponges. We booked a Garden View with 5th night free program which is what we received. Housekeeeping was great and since we left at different times each day I would call usually when leaving the room. I was very impressed that they remembered our preferences such as extra coffee, splenda and red wine glasses each day. These small things are so nice.
This trip was different with our daughter however we really enjoyed it and look forward to returning. We only scheduled dinner 4 of the 7 nights. Twice at Spago, once at Ferrero and at Capishe at Diamond Resort. I am so glad we did not schedule more dinner reservations with our baby. The one night we dined at Spago with her it was challenging. She did not want to sit still and we did a lot of walking around with her. I also did not feel like this was fair to others dining. So we decided that was the last "nice" dinner with her. Other nights we had appetizers at the open air lobby bar and listened to music, we also picked up food from Cheeseburger in Paradise and dined at Longhis; both located in The Shops at Wailea. We did use The Nanny Connection for 1 day and 2 nights. I was slightly unseasy about this however we had met many of the nannys on our previous trips plus ready great reviews about them. It was really nice for us to be able to get away as adults for 3 hours which is their minimum. Spago was excellent, I think this is funny since we did not even try it our first trip because of mixed reviews, we discovered it our 2nd trip and love it. Ferreros is my favorite at sunset however this trip we had it planned for our last evening; unfortunately they closed it due to bad weather. Thankfully the concienrge had made back up reservations at Spago for us. Our favorite this trip was Capishe. We were so impressed with the service, food and view. They even called the nest day to check up. I was a bit unseasy beacuse we have tried other places at nearby resorts in the past and been dissapointed. We will try Capishe again it was a great experience.
We spent most of our days out by the pool in a cabana since we now have a baby. Most days we were able to overlook the ocean and still be close to the pool. They set up pack-n-plays for kids if you request. The pool staff is so friendly, most of them remembered our name each day which is nice. We had luch out there each day and it was quite good and reasonable.
We had a couples massage one afternoon which was great. I am always impressed with the spa services.
The resort was quite full towards the end of our stay and it was harder to get a cabana so we went out around 8am and had one set up and then alternated until we both came out with our daughter around 9am. I was a little annoyed with people who would get a cabana at 7am and then show up at 10. The staff will only hold a cabana for 30 minutes unless it is between 11-2 and then it is 2 hours however most people were able to keep their cabanas even when gone for extended period of times. I just think this is rude. If you point it out they will remove their items and open the cabana but I did not want to be "Cabana police"
Yes the resort is expensive however if you are looking for great service and a relaxing beautiful vacation this is it!!!!!! We can not wait to return.

The area in which the hotel is located is gorgeous and quiet. It has not yet become comercialized like Kanapalli. This hotel is in between the Fairmont and the Grand Wailea. We wandered over to both and the Four Seasons is definitely more tasteful and elegant in appearance. I enjoy beautiful marble floors, tasteful decor etc. That's a huge plus. You get a beautiful lei and welcome. The staff is very courteous and friendly. They seem eager to help. The pool is clean and the cabanas and servers are efficient. They remembered our name which is a very nice touch. Each day they came around to give us water, fruit, Evian spritzers, and cool towels. On the negative side I didn't enjoy the large amount of babies and kids everywhere. We are a late thirties couple and would have prefered something more adult, but with that being said the kids were controlled fairly well. They do have a separate pool area, yet many parents let them come into the main pool for adults. While we are both in shape the place also seems to be the place to be for daily running and to show off your newest liposuction. I have never seen so many 40-50s with redone bodies in my life and I'm from LA! The rooms were spacious and tasteful. We booked a garden room and received a complimentary partial ocean view upgrade. My husband liked this, but personally I would have enjoyed the garden as we overlooked the driveway, putting green, and croquet. I wanted to sleep with my windows open, but it was slightly noisy due to the walkway and drive for that. On the negative side the rooms weren't as clean as we'd like. I know I'm picky, but our shower had mold and brown grout in it. There was also a stain on the floor. The housekeeping was below average. All they did was make our bed and set up new towels. They didn't clean the sinks, tables, or vacuum. The thing that really bothered me was one day they simply 'forgot' to even clean our room! We did not have a do not disturb sign on either. We also received a box of fresh cookies and were told it would be refilled nightly, but we never saw it again. We are not sure if the porter may have been misinformed. Additionally, the air conditioner rattled away and kept me up. My husband hit it a few times and eventually it wasn't as bad, but still slighlty rattled. Onto the food...we ate at all the restaurants including the breakfast buffet, Snorkels, and poolside. This is not a place to budget and the food is average. We had room service our first night due to a late arrival. I would not recommend it. It was not good by room service standards and pricey. I had an ahi cesear that tasted old and stale. The next night we ate at Ferraro's. Lovely setting, but okay food. It was pricey and we love to dine at expensive four or five diamond restaurants, but his does not fit the bill. It's expensive, but not that great. We were so disappointed as many reviews were great. We also love wine and I was outraged to see wines we normally pay $100 marked up to $500 up to $5200! Yes, that's right! Ridiculous. Next, we ate at Duo's which was even more disappointing. The service and food were average and it lacks ambiance. We also got stuck next to a couple with two crying babies which ruined it for us further. With our bill we got a plate of cotton candy which we weren't sure what to do with. The best of the group is Spago. We ate there twice. First time was amazing. I was hesitant as it's a chain, but the food was by far the best and cheapest. The second time we ate there the service started out great with a friendly waiter who promplty brought us our bottle of wine and appetizer, but then disappeared. It was over an hour before our small pieces of mahi arrived. Plus, they were out of all their other fish and substituing mahi for the same price! Slightly disappointing. We ate the breakfast buffet twice. It's $34 so we didn't do it everyday as I can't eat that much food anyway. The other days we grabbed muffins and fruit from Snorkels at the pool. Then, we ordered lunch and drinks poolside. Pricey again, but decent food. The drinks were good and priced reasonably. That seems to be the only thing that was. Overall, it is a very nice place and the nicest hotel in Wailea. We had dinner at the Grand, drinks at the Marriiot and those hotels were old with inferior service. We don't mind spending money, but like it to be quality. We have stayed at five star hotels that seemed much nicer for the same or less cost. Would recommend it and go back again.

We have stayed at this hotel three times in the past few years and every year it gets better! The staff is amazing, the hotel is gorgeous, the rooms are awesome and the beach is beautiful. This time, they upgraded us to a deluxe room with a direct oceanview since we were there just a few months before. From the lei greeting as you arrive, the lavender scented cold towels to freshen up with as they check you in and the arrival gifts in our room of food, beverages as well as gifts for our two teenagers were all amazing. The pool area is always clean, well serviced and relaxing. The beach area is serviced well too though you need to get down early to get a chaise! The breakfast buffet is worth the price and it is pricey so I would suggest doing a bed and breakfast package so you don't feel the sting of $40 for a full buffet or $30 for continental. The rooms are so clean, the bathrooms are huge and the beds are some of the most comfortable we have slept in. This hotel is an overall winner. It's also nice that the staff remembers the return guests and treats you like family.

“Mixed feelings”

We visited this resort during Spring Break 2008. The pool service is inconsistent at best. The staff really tries to be accomodating. However, there are not enough competent pool staff to deliver 4 Seasons quality service. Get up at 4:00 am to get one of the "first come first serve" cabanas at pool or beachside. You need to be out at the pool by 5:00 am at the latest to even get a chair by the pool. I think that is pretty lame considering the $500-5000 nightly room rate folks are paying to stay there. That said, we found most of the other services to be rather nice. They will go out their way to assist you. However, sometimes it can be a bit patronizing. If you have kids- they'll love it (especially if they are used to being spoiled)! This hotel is large and full of families (lots of rich teenagers). We wouldn't reccommend it for couples. However, if you can afford the minimum $1000/day price tag- load up the family and bring them to the Four Seasons Maui. Your kids will love the beach, $15 lunch buffet, game room, pools, and activities. You will love the sunsets and impeccable Four Seasons service at their restaurants (only at dinner). Breakfast at Duo is similar to the service you will get at Denny's. Grab a fruit plate and croissant at Snorkel's for $12. It's a much better value than the $32 buffet offered at Duo. Plus, you don't have to wait 15-30 minutes for someone to pick up your check while missing valuable time in the sun with your family. Finally, do not ask for anything out of the ordinary. You will most likely be disappointed. Go with the flow, don't expect 5 star service, especially at the pool, and you will enjoy yourself.

This is not the Four Seasons many of you are used to. However, compared to other properties in Wailea, it is definetly the best value. Just don't bring your kids next door to the Grand Wailea unless you are willing to spend $250/day for a pool pass. They will be jealous.

Cheers,

Anonmynous

“Great Hotel - Fix the Room Descriptions”

Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea

4 of 5 stars
California

17/19 found this review helpful

If you’ve stayed at lot of high-end hotels worldwide (other Four Seasons, Ritz, Obreroi) this one gets a B+. If you are comparing to other vacation hotels in Hawaii on a strip it would have gotten an A (except for the disingenuous marketing of its rooms.) It has all the great things you expect from a Four Seasons – most noticeably a gracious, caring staff (even during the Easter Break.) Unlike some of the other reviewers I was pleasantly surprised by the restaurants – we ate in all of them. Spago, Duo, Ferraro’s and I must say that Spago’s – overpriced as it is – was a wonderful experience. Every dish at Spago’s was terrific, service was attentive yet transparent and we ate our appetizers as the sun was setting. The other restaurants were also fine. BTW, if you get a chance leave the premises one evening and have dinner at Sansei in Kihei (a 15 minute drive) one of the most innovative Sushi restaurants on the islands.

The rooms themselves were quite nice, but nothing extraordinary for this class of hotel. They were large, comfortable, with a nice bathroom and balcony, etc.

One of the downsides is nothing they can change easily. The pool area is just too small to handle holiday crowds. The staff handles all poolside requests with panache, but you are packed cheek to jowl with your neighbors. Same with the sand beach below.

This is a physically large hotel like the Four Seasons Hualalai on the Big Island. But on the Big Island that hotel had enough property to design the room layout so most of them face the ocean. Here in Maui, the property is much smaller, so the hotel is designed as a U-shape, with the majority of the rooms facing the courtyard with a small view of the ocean if you crane your neck. Hence the hotels biggest downside – if you’re in your room you’re looking at the other rooms across the courtyard.

The good news of course is that if you’re in Hawaii your not hanging out in the room much. So that would have been fine if they tell you what you’re getting. However, having never stayed at this hotel I called by phone and asked reservations for an ocean view room. They said they had one and would I like an ocean view prime room. What a surprise in checking in to find out that a $1000/night “ocean view prime” room is a room with a view of the courtyard with a small peek at the ocean if you’re angled correctly or sitting on the balcony. (In fairness to the hotel the website describes the room view honestly, but the phone reservation people never mentioned it and I was nowhere near a web browser.)

My suggestion to management is that this is a great hotel offering a great product - you don’t need to market the hotel like the Marriott. There is nothing “Ocean View Prime” about these rooms. It tarnishes the brand and makes the Four Seasons seem like another over hyped Hawaii experience.

So if you know what to expect room wise or don’t care, this is a five-star hotel for a Maui resort experience.
