I have been going to Maui every year for over 15 years until four years ago and decided to take a break. I have stayed in all types of hotels and vacation rentals over that time from private beach houses, condos and resorts on both sides of the island including the Hyatt (which I still like) Sheraton, Kei Lani, Grand Wailea (horrible and last choice) and the Four Seasons. While this was not our first time visiting the Four Seasons I would have to say that based on experience this really is the best choice available and while not cheap at close to $1,000 a night you really do get what you pay for here. We booked a partial ocean view room on the club level. What I liked about this room, it faces the outside of the Resort towards Makena. The prime ocean view rooms on the club level face towards the pool area and the Grand Wailea (disneyland) next door and you also see the rooms across the courtyard. I'm at the pool all day or on the beach and see that view, so it was nice to face towards the Molikini crater to get a different look so I would say a booking tip here is not to pay for the prime ocean view rooms. Another nice option about the Four Seasons is you can fax a shopping list and have your in room frig. stocked with the items you want. This is not as important if your on the club level as they have food service four times a day and an open bar at all times, no cost and if you need anything you can just take it to your room, for example bottled water, chips, sandwiches and so on. The club level food service had a continental breakfast in the morning that varies every day with a combination of the usual items and a few new ones like french toast, egg fritata, eggs florentine as a few examples, mid day or afternoon tea as they call it was a mix of sandwiches, quiche, cheese, deserts and other finger foods. The happy hour also had a mix of the same items everyday and a few new hot and cold appetizers. The fourth service was around 8:30pm to ? which was all deserts and really, really good. With food service like this every day you don't need to go down for breakfast in the morning at $35 a person. Other items included on the club level are your own private staff to arrange day trips, rest resv's free use of the internet and business center on that level, use of binoculars to view any whales going by and many other perks.
I would say that as with all resorts at this level budget and bring some $$$ for tips, they go a long way. The beach staff, pool staff were great. The cabanas by the pool fill up fast. People were going to the pool a laying stuff out early, I mean early 6am. They have a policy that at 7am when the staff shows up you check in with them and regardless if there are items already out they will be removed and the cabanas and chairs given out, this is important as people would put stuff on chairs leave and come back hours later. I found it best to show up at 7am hand the attendant $40 get a cabana and be taken care of all day. Now if you think that sounds expensive I will tell you my friends were staying at Disneyland (Grand Wailea) next door and if you want to reserve a cabana there for the day it will cost you over $350
They really do bring you cold evian, frozen fruit and drinks. They will also stop by and detail your sunglasses for you. The beach has toys available for the children, cold water and both the beach and pool areas have free suntan lotion so don't bother buying and hauling lotion around with you, another tip.
The gym and cardio equipment were top quality and in great condition. The spa is really relaxing and the treatments were some of the best I have had. We had dinner at all three restaurants and were never let down by the service or food. At Duo they have mixologist and drink menu that is worth paying some attention to. Spago is great place for a meal and drink and another tip is to book Feraros for dinner at around 30 min before sunset. The restaurant is outdoors and overlooks the beach. In my opinion the three best restaurants on Maui are all located at the Four Seasons, Spago, Duo and Feraros.
We were traveling with children and the perks were cribs, toys, diaper bin, changing supplies, strollers and many other items available at no charge.
Other items to cover not about the Four Seasons. What ever you do, stay away from the Grand Wailea next door, this place has gone to rock bottom. The restaurants there are as bad as they get, the spa is really dirty, I walked out of it. You can take a short walk to the shops at Wailea where you will find the Tommy Bahama bar and restaurant. It use to have a great view until they built condos in front of it about three years ago as I'm told. The bar is fun, the food is just okay, but for an easy casual meal it's good. There is also a Ruth Chris steak house, however I find this strange, who wants to eat a heavy meal in hot weather. Another cheap eats if you want to leave the resort is Maui Tacos down the road in Kiehi. We also tried Joe's for the first time. The ribs are good but not really much to the place, it's close and kid friendly. I remember reading some reviews regarding the long road to place and needing to get a ride in the golf cart, this is the most absurd thing I have read. If you can't walk from the parking lot to restaurant and back, you have more important things to worried about, like your physical condition and possibly the need to get personal trainer, my 3 year walked there and back with not problem. If you like good wine and would like to buy a bottle at reasonable prices across the street from Joe's is Wailea wine. It's only a three minute drive from the resort. We always stop there for a few bottles to have around if we want to go down to the beach at sunset on our own or with our friends.
The kids camp was great for our older children, lots of activities and a climbing wall. They also have a large game room with a couple of pool tables, ping pong, and a gaming room with several gaming systems. This was nice as our kids and their friends went there after dinner and the adults were able to have a relaxing after dinner drink.
The Four Seasons brand has always been reliable. Other than the issue of digging for a cabana or pool side chair every day this place is first class. Even the group and very small convention people that come here are a cut above most that you would find at other resorts and blend well with the paying guest.
