“Beautiful vacation, nice hotel”

Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

May 2, 2008

We just returned from our Maui vacation (April 22 - April 29). We arrived around 4:00pm and check-in was easy. The staff was friendly and helpful throughout our entire stay.

The infinity pool at Marriott is amazing. It is adults-only and we made sure to spend two full days there. The cabana rental was $50.00/day and it was worth the money. It is nice and relaxing to look into the beautiful ocean and sip a couple drinks pool-side.

We ate at the restaurant on-site a total of three times. The breakfast buffet was great. It runs about $30.00/person. You can also order from the breakfast menu if you are not in the mood for a buffet. We tried dinner twice. One night it was very good and the other night it was awful. If I went back I would just stick to breakfast on-site.

I like that Marriott is close to The Grand Wailea and The Four Seasons. It is a nice walk and both resorts are easily accessible. It seemed to us that The Grand Wailea would be great if you have kids and The Four Seasons would be ideal for couples.

We went to the Lobby Lounge at the Four Seasons and it was a good place to have a drink and appetizers and enjoy some music. Just be aware that it is pretty pricey but you will get great service. After being there a short time I realized why they have the reputation that they do! The Grand Wailea has a fantastic Japanese restaurant named Kincha that offers a buffet at $52.00/person. I highly recommend going to Cheeseburger in Paradise at the Wailea Shops on one of your evenings or after noons on the island. They have the best drinks by far and they were resonably priced. I don't recommend the food, but the mixed drinks are the best!

The Marriott was a nice place to stay. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. It is in a good location and the infinity pool was a major plus. Enjoy!

“Nice hotel with horrible service!”

Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

2 of 5 stars
Phoenix, AZ
May 1, 2008

The hotel was newly renovated, rooms were spacious, decorated well but you could tell it was an older property by looking at the ceiling. They forgot to update the ceilings and you could tell because they were dirty and yellowing! The grounds were beautiful, the pools great, (the new adult pool area was very nice!), and the location was ideal. Shopping at the Wailea Village shops was wonderful and the beach access easy. BUT, I do not recommend it and I will not stay at this hotel again.

The major draw back to this place was the service. The staff was horrible! I was shocked at how unfriendly the bell staff and the front desk staff were! Driving in to the hotel it was dark and the signage is really bad and nonexistent. We pulled up and asked the guys standing at the bell station where the front desk was located and where do we park. They immediate asked us if we wanted valet (and I read the many reviews on this site that talked about the ease of self parking), so we declined. Then asked if we wanted them to take our backs, again we declined. From that point forward, the bell staff was rude, not helpful and really disappointing. We made it to the front desk to check in and of course when we checked in we asked the typical question “room with an ocean view and high floor please” and got the standard and very bothered response “for $75 a night we can upgrade you”. She (the front desk agent) said nothing more after I declined the upgrade. Other then to offer us the $25 a day or $15 a day options of resort fees. She did not tell us about the hotel, only to point us in the direction of our room. When we realized we had to go down several flights of stairs, we asked the again, rude bell person for an elevator. We were told they didn’t have an elevator! Apparently, they wanted to see us struggle the ‘grand staircase’, because they did not ask us if we wanted help only told us the stairs are ‘over there’. I was very annoyed, being a weekly traveler, Marriott Rewards Gold member and former hotel manager; I was ready to check out before we even made it to the room. When we got to our room, it was on the bottom floor directly next to the older pool with no view. AND, they were using the room next to us as the bathroom for pool guest! I was appalled and laughing at this point, how could this be a Marriott? So, we called and spoke to a different agent who offered us a room on the second level. We took it and were pleased that it had a partial view to the ocean, and guess what? We didn’t have to pay the $75 the first agent so nicely requested. The only friendly person we ran into was the pool server and the concierges. They were both professional and helpful. Oh, and by the way, they do have an elevator; we found it after wondering around the property on the 2nd day.

In summary, there are some fabulous hotels in Wailea at a very similar cost of the Marriott! Stay at them! The 4 Seasons and the Wailea Beach resort, we walked and ate at both and the staff was very friendly, greeted everyone. The Wailea Marriott staff needs to be trained on how to treat guests, there are too many hotels out there to have to deal with rude people, we are on vacation!

“Best in Wailea”

Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

We had been to Maui several times, but never stayed in the Wailea area and decided it was time. We chose the Marriott and were thrilled with it. For us, it was the best choice, because we love to be close to the water. Our oceanfront room was extremely close and we loved relaxing to the sound of crashing waves.

Although this hotel in not on a beach, it is oceanfont. Our room looked directly at Wailea beach. We could be on the beach in about 3 minutes. We could also walk to 3 other fantastic beaches. We didn't feel deprived at all because the property itself was not on a beach.

Service at the hotel was great in every way. We would call housekeeping as we left each day and the room was always perfect when we got back.

Our favorite part of the hotel grounds was the serenity pool. It's been mentioned on here a lot, but it was just so relaxing.

The hotel has some great places to eat. With the path in front of the hotel you can walk easily to the Grand Wailea, and the Four Seasons. We also picked up lunch several days at the deli in the Whaler's General Store in the shopping center across the parking lot from the Marriott.

We would love to return to this property!

“Poor Check In Experience and hated the upgrade sell!”

Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

Title says it all really. I was very disappointed with our check in experience. As a Marriott Gold Rewards member I had expected more ... there was no greeting and instead of being offered automatic upgrade I got the hard sell to upgrade for $75. When we pointed out my status the upgrade was received for free ... this shouldn't have happened.

Room was in Hale 5 just off the infinity pool area - not a great view but 2 mins to the pool is fine by me. Decor in room was modern but I HATED the bed ... not at all comfortable!

The infinity pool is definitely the Marriott's number one asset - it is gorgeous with fantastic views over the ocean (with the occasional whale spotted from my sun lounger). They also offer a pool service and during our stay we had two lovely ladies (Anita and Terri) running around fetching us all our drinks (very much appreciated). Staff also walked round with iced water, cool flannels and a rosehip moisturiser (nice touches).

We ate lunch every day at the grill bar - BBQ sandwiches and salads (not a vast selection but v.tasty).

We had dessert at the bar on once night - delicious chocolate souffle!

Another good asset of this hotel is the beach walk down to Wailea Beach and past all the other hotels. Great for a morning or afternoon stroll and a stop at Wailea Beach is a must .

Hotel is walking distance to shops at Wailea (restaurants here include Ruth Chris and Tommy Bahamas). Short drive into Kihei - about ten mins.

“"A Work in Progress"”

Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

4 of 5 stars
colorado

Just returned from a 10 night stay at the Maui Marriott
(April 15-25). From the time we check-in to the time we checked out, everyone from the front office staff, pool staff, and housekeeping staff were extremely nice. As a side note, we also stayed at this property in December 2007 for four nights and enjoyed it very much, hence, our return trip.

We were placed on the fifth floor overlooking the lobby with a partial ocean view - absoulutely gorgeous. As some people have noted, the rooms have been renovated recently. There was plenty of storage room to unpack your clothes, as well as, a refrigerator to hold snacks and drinks. While some people found the beds comfortable, I am not one to like soft beds, hence, not the excellent rating (my only complaint). They do have a pull-out sofa in each room and I was tempted to use it, but did not. Maid service was excellent each day of our stay . In addition, they do have washers and dryers to do laundry.

When we were at the Marriott in December, the infinity pool was still being constructed. Now, that it is is completed, all I can say is that it is beautiful. Being our first day at the pool, we decided to rent a cabana ($50.00/day) which includes water and magazines. Yes, I felt it was a little on the expensive side, but we didn't want to be burnt toast on our first day. They do have umbrellas at the older pool, but since the infinity pool is for adults only, we wanted the piece and quiet - not that we don't love children (we have four). Pool service was excellent - thanks to Teri for her cheerfulness and always being there when we needed that drink with the umbrella (LOL). There are a total of 4 pools and a kid's pool at the Marriott. On our last day, Friday, April 25th we sat by the infinity pool and were pleased to see that they were in the process of putting permanent umbrellas around the lounge chairs.

As noted, the Marriott is an older property. It used to be the Outrigger Hotel and before that the Intercontinental. It is a "Work in Progress." They continue improving the property. The rooms are very nice, the open air lobby is inviting, and the pool area, especially the infinity pool, is very relaxing. During our stay, there was always some type of improvement being made, whether that be replacing the tile on the grand staircase, the light bulbs in the lobby, or working on the landscaping (it was not intrusive). The property has a lot of potential, and it was our feeling that the Marriott is trying to reach their full potential in this hotel. Just like anything, it takes time, but I have no doubt that they will achieve their goal.

Though the hotel is not situated directly on a beach, but on a rocky point, there are beaches on both sides of the hotel within easy walking distance (just a few minutes). We did venture down to the rocks a few times and enjoyed watching the sea turtles bob their heads in and out of the water.

As far as the restaurants are concerned, we did not try them. They have a restaurant off the main lobby for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Also, there is a pool side bar restaurant that is open from 10:30am to sunset. We had hoped this bar would be open later for watching basketball playoff games - perhaps in the summer they extend their hours? It would be nice if they had a coffee shop (think Starbucks) in the hotel, but there is one next door at the Wailea Shops.

All in all, I have to say that we enjoyed our stay at the Marriott very much and would recommend it if you are looking for piece and quiet.
