Stayed here on a Friday night as we were attending a Montreal-Buffalo hockey game that night. The fact that the hotel was within walking distance of the arena and that the hotel was close to some nightlife were the two main factors in our decision, plus I am very loyal to the Hampton Inn brand. This was my first trip to Buffalo.
The property itself is very nice - grounds are neat and well-kept. Nice lobby area, and the pool area was very big and bright. Check-in was fine. They weren't able to accomodate my request for a room on the quiet side away from Chippewa St, but they put me as far down the street as possible. Noise did not end up being an issue for us, in fact we just put the fan on and didn't hear anything.
Room was very large, especially for a downtown hotel (although downtown Buffalo isn't exactly "prime real estate"). It had a bit of a lofty feel in the sense that the ceilings were high and the windows very big. The hotel is an older building recently converted and they seem to have done a great job. Older TV but it worked well and lots of channels. No prob with the free internet, nice desk and great desk chair. Good lighting, two comfortable arm chairs in the room. Bathroom was basic but a good size. There was a bit of red mold in the corners of the tub but nothing horrible. Excellent water pressure in the shower!
The main complaint I have is that when I pulled down the covers to go to bed (at 1AM) I noticed that there were an awful lot of hairs on the sheets. If I see 1-2 I figure it's no big deal, but here there were a lot more than that (long ones). I called the front desk and someone was up within 5 mins with a new set of sheets and she re-made the bed for me. She mentioned that they must have a housekeeper with stray hairs because they have had a few complaints. I'm not sure if that was actually the problem, but maybe it was. Anyway, they dealt with the situation well, but it shouldn't have happened. The other double bed in the room was fine.
As far as Buffalo goes, this is a pretty good location - but we were pretty disappointed with the downtown core - really not much happening there. But this is not the hotel's problem. I would go out and say with confidence that this is your best hotel option for downtown Buffalo. We even saw the broadcast crew for the Montreal Canadiens in the lobby so looks like members of the organization use this hotel too.
I'd recommend, just check your bed before you get in to be sure :)
