It nearly makes me cry when I think that we almost didn't go to Hanauma Bay! I had read such mixed reviews on TA that we put it in the "maybe" category, planning to do it only if we had enough time. Well, thankfully, we did and it was one of the best experiences of our nine day Oahu/Maui vacation.
It was the first time snorkeling for both my husband and I, which was good and bad. Good because it's a great place to learn, as you can walk in from the shore, stand up whenever you need to, and practice clearing your mask and snorkel in shallow water. Bad, because it completely spoiled us....we took two other snorkel trips by boat in Maui, snorkeling at 5 other spots, including Molikini and Lanai, and didn't see anything that compared for number and variety of fish.
We took the city bus there which worked out just fine. We arrived about 1 pm on a Monday afternoon and the parking lot was completely full and they were turning away visitors. If you are going to drive, ensure that you get there early enough to get a parking spot or you may be disappointed.
There were only two negatives to our Hanauma Bay snorkeling experience...one is the equipment rental. The staff is pretty uninterested in helping customers and there's apparently no inspection of equipment before it's rented. Be sure to check yours out thoroughly before you get into the water-my husband eventually had to return both his fins and mask due to damage.
The other negative, which absolutely shocked me, was all the people walking on the coral when you are told explicitly not to. Even more shocking was that there is absolutely no supervision to ensure that the rules are followed....the lack of respect for nature and enforcement of the rules was positively appalling.
So, in sum, 5 stars for snorkeling at Hanauma Bay and 1 star for whoever's job it is to enforce the rules and keep the Bay beautiful for generations to come.
