Hi everyone. My wife and I got married on 23rd June 2007 in the UK and we set off a day or two later on our honeymoon to St Lucia. We'd booked to stay at the Marigot Beach Club via Virgin Holidays but I'd also contacted Bernie who runs the resort office to organise things and make enquiries etc. He was very helpful and responds to emails very quickly.
We were due to stay at Marigot for 2 weeks with a week's independant stay elsewhere on the island in the middle. That meant we stayed for 6 nights, then went to stay at La Haut Plantation in Souffriere for 7 nights, and then returned to Marigot for our last 6 nights. What a trip. Virgin were fine about the gap in the middle too which was great.
So, Marigot Bay. What can I say. It was fab. The airport in St Lucia is a bit hard work but we eventually made it to the bay. The views as you drive over the hill and first see Marigot are stunning. When we got to the little ferry pontoon we kind of looked around not knowing what was going on but within seconds the little Marigot Ferry was on it's way across the bay to greet us. It runs all day back and forth and a ferry pass was included in our rate. The lads who run the boat service are great and happily helped us with our bags. Quite romantic really, getting the ferry over to your private resort!
That turned out to be one of the best bits about our stay. The fact it was private. We virtually had the place to ourselves. David (who you'll no doubt have read about) was in London for our first week so Big AL was left in charge and he did a great job.
As it was our honeymoon Bernie upgraded us to one of the deluxe villas which we were really happy about. The room was great and the views beautiful. Marigot is not so much a beach resort as it is mainly a small marina but there was still ample opportunity to snorkel and swim.
Doolittles restaurant was very nice. Good value and good food. A couple of nights we ate elsewhere. The Rainforest hideaway was shut when we were there and JJ's was a real disappointment. Their crab night was awful and we sent three main courses back! Chateau Mygo is more a snack place but the do do buy one get one free on all drinks ALL DAY!!! The piton beers go down a treat especially at 2 for 1!
In our last week we met Maurice who was a lovely irish guy. He's the food & beverage director at Discovery. We ate there on our last night and I can honestly say I have never had better. the food was amazing but be warned, the wine list is not cheap!!! I spent £100 per head on that last meal (with wine) but it was well worth it.
Finally David. What can I say, he's quite a character! Having said that so am I and he was really good fun. He made us feel very welcome and genuinely appreciated the fact that we'd chosen to stay at Marigot. He has a friend who is the local helicopter pilot, Alex. We had helicopter transfers booked so Alex got us both in the front seats and gave us a personalised flight back over the resort and the piton mountains. Unbelievable. Thanks Alex!
The other person who cannot go without a mention is Wilson. The worlds best bar man. What a star. He has a little shopping trolley which he wheels out every night to pack up the stock. Such a lovely guy. He became a real friend.
We had such an amazing time. We hired a car via Bernice and expored the island. Went to Pigeon Island, smugglers cove and Rodney bay. All easily explored from Marigot as the location is great. We felt extremely safe and well looked after. David even offers guests a 50% discount if they return and I am totally intending on taking him up on that offer.
I can also recommend the friday fish fry at anse la raye. Get Alex the water taxi guy to take you. He's another top man. His reputation is all he has but he's honest and hard working.
It was the best honeymoon ever and I loved this place. Don't let anything put you off or you'll be missing out on one of the most special locations on the planet. Feel free to drop me an email at beninmarlow@yahoo.co.uk. Enjoy! I'll try to put up some photos when i get chance.
