River Antoine Rum Distillery

This is the oldest distillery in Grenada and it still uses a water-wheel to power the rollers which squeeze the juice out of the sugar cane.  During the dry season, when the juice is very concentrated, they make the rum from only the cane juice itself.  During the wet season, when the juice is more dilute, they supplement the cane juice with molasses.  A tour of the distillery costs EC$5 and at the end you can sample the rum.

Two different strengths

Two different strengths of rum are produced: 75% alcohol and 69% alcohol.  You will NOT be allowed to board any plane leaving Grenada if you are carrying any of the 75% alcohol rum - this is for safety reasons as the stronger rum is highly flammable.  All luggage is thoroughly searched at the airport and any rum that is over 70% alcohol, from whichever distillery, will be confiscated.
